Pre-kindergarten story time
This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten every Wednesday in November at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library.
Theater has high-tea fundraiser
The Hopewell Theatre (formerly the Victorian Players) will host a Victorian High-Tea Fundraiser on Nov. 18 from 3-6 p.m., at the Piccadilly Parlour, located at 114 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support its handicap accessibility project. A luncheon will be served, beginning at 3:15 p.m. and will consist of a cup of soup (your choice), tea sandwiches, sweets and tea (or coffee). Entertainment by the Just Friends Community Chorus will begin at 4 p.m. Background music will be provided by Darlene and Joe MacBenn on harp and flute. There will be a live auction and a 50/50 raffle, all proceeds going to the handicap accessibility project. Door prizes will be awarded. Victorian dress is encouraged but, not necessary. Due to limited seating, reservations are required. The cost is $30 per person and $15 of the ticket price is tax deductible. Santa at the library: reindeer games
Santa Claus is coming to the Austintown library on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. Come and see Santa and a live reindeer. Although Rudolph doesn’t have a shiny nose, he’ll be at the library with Santa and hiss sleigh. Take your picture with Santa, see his reindeer and enjoy hot cocoa and snacks in the meeting room. You can make a reindeer craft, play games and maybe listen to a reindeer story or two.
Playtime at your library
Read a story at the Austintown library on Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Holiday closing
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Thanksgiving on Nov. 22.
Choir boosters host Santa’s Workshop Craft Show
The Austintown Fitch Choir Boosters will host a Santa’s Workshop Craft Show in the Fitch High School cafeteria on Dec. 16 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The show will consist of crafts, consultants, a 50/50 raffle and a basket auction. The fundraiser will benefit the choir boosters, who are raising money for the choir’s trip to the Norfolk, Va. Navy base. The boosters are actively accepting vendors for the craft show until Nov. 30.

Guess the picture book
Guess the picture book from the cut up cover at the Austintown library during regular hours throughout November. One winner chosen at random from correct entries. This event is for children of all ages.
Financial Aid 101 with the Mahoning Valley College Access Program
This session, which will take place at the Austintown library on Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m. will break down the FAFSA process into easy steps and answer questions about the application itself. Participants will learn the difference between three types of financial aid - grants, loans and scholarships - and how to access them. Call the library at 330-744-8636 to reserve your seat or sign up online via the library’s events calendar. This event is for teens and parents of teens.
Read to Reese
To help build your child’s reading confidence, sign them up to read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners, on Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Austintown library. Bring your own book, or the librarians will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Registration is required. Space is limited. Register online or by calling 330-744-8636 and ask for the Austintown library. This event is for school-age children.
Thanksgiving turkey DIY
Make a turkey craft to take home or give away at this event at the Austintown library on Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m. Materials will be provided. Registration is required. This event is for tweens in grades 5-8.
Movie night
Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie at the Austintown library on Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the entire family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Chapter Chat book club
Attend the Chapter Chat book club on Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library where they will be reading and discussing a book together every month. Each month will be a new genre. This month’s book will be “Bossypants” by Tina Fey. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults.
Silent book club
If you need some quiet “me time,” join the Austintown library for its silent book club on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. You can bring in your own book, grab one off the shelf or even read a digital book in a designated group quiet time. During this time, they will discuss what they will be reading and whether the book is a hit or a miss. Light refreshments will be provided. This event is for adults.
Blood drive
There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital on Nov. 17 from 10:30 until 3 p.m. at the Austintown library. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Friends of the Austintown Library meeting and presentation
Dr. Robert Marcus, U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, will present “Homeless Veterans: An Outreach Program” at the Austintown library on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. He has developed a community resource and referral center for the purpose of accessing services to provide optimal care for our homeless veterans. The Austintown Friends take book donations on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 10 a.m. until noon.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library every Tuesday in November at 10 a.m.
Christie to sign books

Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library on Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.
The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season
The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Upcoming shows are: Dec. 7-15 - “Snoopy, the Musical,” Jan. 4-13 - “Sea Horse,” Feb. 15-24 - “Raisin in the Sun,” March 29-April 7 - “Godspell,” May 10-19 - “Deathtrap” and June 7-16 - “On Golden Pond.” Flex passes are on sale for six shows for $60 for adults and $42 for seniors/students.
Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings
Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard.
