WEATHER WATCH | Slick conditions slow Valley travel

YOUNGSTOWN

Freezing rain and icy bridges are slowing morning commutes in some parts of the Mahoning Valley, especially on the Madison Avenue Expressway, where police briefly rerouted motorists due to icing and mishaps.

On the Expressway north, police were on the scene of a three-car accident, but traffic was flowing well in the opposite direction.

There was also an accident on the Marshall Street Bridge downtown.

Also a pickup truck flipped on Interstate 76 west near Bailey Road but the driver declined treatment, the state patrol said.

On state Route 11 the patrol had cruisers spaced at turnarounds, making sure motorists watched their speed.

Conditions on 11 south from state Route 305 were good, but in Youngstown, ice coated the portion of Gypsy Lane from state Route 711 to U.S. Route 422, making for a slippery descent.

The ice appeared to be turning to rain later in the morning though cars were glazed.

Because of the weather and slick roads, all Youngstown City School District after-school activities are canceled for today.
