School, TCBDD committee to host fundraiser

Fairhaven School, in association with The Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ Wellness Committee, will host Volley for a Cure at 5 p.m. in Fairhaven School’s gymnasium. The event is designed to give back to the community. Proceeds raised by this year’s volleyball game will be presented to the Hope Center in Howland to help assist people who are dealing with cancer and need some assistance with paying for gas, medications and more. Depending on how much money is raised, a substantial amount will also be given to 20 families at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. The cost to attend the game is a $1 donation. Individuals also can support the cause by joining a team, purchasing Volley for a Cure T-shirts ($10) or by reserving a special luminary page in honor or memory of someone affected by cancer ($1). The luminary pages will be displayed in the school’s hallway and gym. The event will include a bake sale and concessions.
Library to host games for seniors

Adults are invited to play brain games at Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 15, in the Quaker Meeting Room. This is an opportunity to have fun while playing board games, dominoes or puzzle solving. Materials are provided. No registration is required. Open to the public and free of cost. Christmas Past event set at Arms Museum

The Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave., will open their Memories of Christmas Past holiday display on Saturday. The display will run from noon to 4 p.m., and Thursdays noon to 7 p.m., until Jan. 6. The museum is closed Mondays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Day, and New Year’s Day. Admission for the exhibit is $9 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and college students and $7 for children age 3-18 (under 3 are free). Visitors on opening weekend can bring in canned goods for Feed our Valley and receive buy one, get one free admission.

Opening night of the annual Joy of Christmas drive-through holiday light display will begin with the annual tradition of Light-Up Columbiana at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by the Christmas parade along Main Street at 6:30 p.m. The Joy of Christmas light display will then open at 7 p.m. Donations of $10 per vehicle or $2 per person on motorcoach are required for entry. Guild plans craft show

The 27th annual St. Jude Women’s Guild Craft Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Torch Club to host guest speaker

The Youngstown Torch Club will sponsor a presentation on strategies used throughout history to raise military forces at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Kilcawley Center’s Hynes Room at Youngstown State University. The program will feature public historian John Fockler, whose presentation, “Raising Armies,” will describe how societies ranging from ancient tribes to modern nation-states have met the challenge of organizing and maintaining standing armies. In his talk, Fockler will outline various strategies that societies have used, including universal military service, mercenary armies, conscription, and partial conscription. He will examine the strengths and weaknesses of those strategies, as well as their implementation in the United States and other parts of the world. Fockler, a longtime member of the Youngstown Torch Club, has contributed articles on a range of topics to the organization’s quarterly journal, The Torch. Campaign to benefit Akron Children’s
Now through Dec. 8, local Eat ’n Park Restaurants will host the annual Caring for Kids campaign with fundraising events to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. Participating locations include: 8051 Market St. in Boardman, 5451 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown and 2057 Walmart Drive NE in Warren. To participate, customers can purchase a star icon and enter basket raffles. The Caring for Kids campaign is a five-week effort where Eat ’n Park conducts various fundraising activities to benefit local children’s hospitals in the communities where their restaurants are located. Since its inception in 1979, the Eat ’n Park Caring for Kids Campaign has raised more than $10 million company-wide. The Eat’n Park Caring for Kids Campaign benefits 14 children’s hospitals. Local Eat ’n Park locations raised $10,964 last year for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley and more than $82,000 since 2008. Learn more at akronchildrens.org.
