Professor to speak at ethics conference

GREENVILLE, PA.

Robert Arnold, M.D., a professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine UPMC/University of Pittsburgh Schools of Health Sciences will be the main speaker at the annual Community Medical Ethics Project’s fall conference at 11 a.m. Thursday at Thiel College. Dr. Arnold will speak about opiates and ethical issues in palliative care.

The conference in the college’s Lutheran Heritage Room of the Howard Miller Student Center is free and open to the public.

Complimentary shuttle service will be provided between the Passavant Center parking lot and the Howard Miller Center. Shuttle signs will designate pick up/drop off locations.

Columbiana-area students are invited to participate in a free two-day Startup Experience Entrepreneurship Workshop at Minerva High School on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.

Facilitated by a team of global business innovators from San Francisco, the interactive program is designed specifically to lead students through the processes needed to become successful business leaders, including the entrepreneurial mindset, business model innovation and idea validation.

Sponsored by WSOS Community Assistance Program and underwritten through a grant from the US Department of Agriculture, the program allows up to 100 students from smaller communities throughout Ohio to participate in the two-day session. Prizes will be awarded and transportation from Columbiana provided.

The deadline for application for participation in the Startup Experience Entrepreneurship Program is Friday. Students interested in participating should contact the Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce at 330-482-3822.

East JROTC places first at competition

YOUNGSTOWN

East High School JROTC students earned a first place overall and first in two events recently at the Kenmore Drill Classic Competition near Akron.

Teams from five high schools competed in the event at which East’s cadets also placed first in the Unarmed Drill Competition and the Color Guard Team event.

Individual East cadets also performed well. Senior Isaiah Weatherly earned first place in the Individual Knockout event, while senior Kayla Grice won third place in Individual Knockout. About 200 students from various high schools competed.

The team also placed third in both the Academic Team and the Raider Team events.
