Canfield Village Middle School sixth-grade band students put on a mini concert for parents, grandparents, relatives and friends during their band period on Oct. 26.
CVMS Band Director Jim Volenik invited sixth-grade band parents to the class.
“The purpose of the mini concert is to show the parents how much new music the kids have learned since September. In fifth grade, the band played in unison for the entire year. Beginning in sixth grade, they begin to play music that is polyphonic. Polyphony is music that typically includes a contrapuntal separation of melody and bass,” Volenik said.
The sixth-grade band showed their talent by performing “The Magnificent Five,” “Early Bird March,” “Five Note Concerto,” “Starlight,” “Homework Blues” and “Bugler’s Dream.”
The band was assisted by Youngstown State University student teacher Kyle O’Donnell.
After the performance, Volenik thanked the parents for coming to the mini concert.
“Thank you for coming today. Kids, give your parents, grandparents, friends and relatives a round of applause for coming to see you today,” Volenik said.
Next, the sixth-grade band will begin to work on music for their holiday concert, which will take place at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12 in the Canfield High School auditorium. The concert will also feature the seventh-grade band and the high school concert band.
