YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State hired a new head bowling coach nearly a month into the regular season, the school announced on Thursday.

Doug Kuberski takes over the Penguin’ program following the departure of Chelsea Gilliam, who became the head coach at Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 1. Clint Daley served as the interim coach since the beginning of the season.

The odd timing of the hire was on Bethune-Cookman taking its time to select Gilliam more than the former YSU coach’s actions, athletic director Ron Strollo said.

Bethune-Cookman fired previous head coach Charles Thomas in March. Gilliam previously expressed to YSU an interest in moving to the southeast of the country to be closer to her mother. BCU is located in Daytona Beach, Fla.

“We were hoping we would hear something in late spring and we thought they moved on to another candidate,” Strollo said. “She got a phone call early in the fall with the offer, which made for challenging timing for us at the start of the season.”

In two seasons, Gilliam had the Penguins earning Top 25 votes from the National Tenpin Coaches Association. The Penguins last year defeated 12 Top 25 teams.

Daley, the former owner of Let’s Go Bowling Daley pro shop in Salem, led the team through two tournaments this season. Strollo said Daley and Kuberski “will have to work something out” to see what Daley’s future is. Since the program’s inception in the 2016-17 season, the team has one paid coach, which will be Kuberski.

Kuberski, a Monroeville, Pa., native, was the men’s and women’s bowling coach at Iowa Western Community College. During the 2017-18 season, he served as the interim head coach at Arkansas State. He went 27-12 with the Red Wolves. He was an academic All-American bowler at Nebraska and helped the Huskers take third in the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships
