Canfield Village Middle School hosts food drive
Students at Canfield Village Middle School are having a canned food drive from Nov. 12-30. Canned food can be dropped off at the middle school. The donation will be given to Second Harvest Food Bank to help with the holidays.
Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on Nov. 19 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” “The Gifts of Change” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ This will be the last meeting for 2018, with the next one taking place in January 2019. Gathering Place event
There will be a Gathering Place event at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. There will be a special program to honor veterans. Lunch will be provided by The Woodlands and blood pressures will be taken promptly at 11 a.m. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is held on the second Monday of the month every month. Theater has high-tea fundraiser
The Hopewell Theatre (formerly the Victorian Players) will host a Victorian High-Tea Fundraiser on Nov. 18 from 3-6 p.m., at the Piccadilly Parlour, located at 114 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support its handicap accessibility project. A luncheon will be served, beginning at 3:15 p.m. and will consist of a cup of soup (your choice), tea sandwiches, sweets and tea (or coffee). Entertainment by the Just Friends Community Chorus will begin at 4 p.m. Background music will be provided by Darlene and Joe MacBenn on harp and flute. There will be a live auction and a 50/50 raffle, all proceeds going to the handicap accessibility project. Door prizes will be awarded. Victorian dress is encouraged but, not necessary. Due to limited seating, reservations are required. The cost is $30 per person and $15 of the ticket price is tax deductible. Seman to speak at Boardman Historical Society meeting
Tim Seman, Genealogy and Local History Librarian, will give a presentation on “The History of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County” at 10 a.m. on Nov. 10 at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. His lecture is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society and is free to the public. Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling Dona Hammond at 330-726-0651. He has worked in archives and libraries for more than 30 years including the Library of Congress, American University and the Ohio Historical Society. Since 1999, he has been with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, currently working as genealogy and local history librarian. He frequently gives genealogy workshops in the community. The Boardman Historical Society meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through May at 10 am at the Boardman library for a lecture on some aspect of local history. Visitors, new members and guests are welcome.
Local chocolatier to lend hand to stop hunger
Gorant Chocolatier is “Lending a Hand to Stop Hunger” in the Mahoning Valley this holiday season by hosting its fourth annual food drive. Nov. 1-15, customers can donate non-perishable food items and receive 5 percent off their purchase for each item donated (up to 25 percent). Participating locations include their Boardman Factory location (8301 Market Street), and Gorant 224 location (1393 Boardman Canfield Road, Suite G). The most needed food items for this holiday season include boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned yams, canned vegetables and gravy mix. Timber marketing class to be Nov. 15
There will be a timber marketing class from 6-8 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Mahoning County Extension Office, located at 490 S. Broad Street in Canfield. Program speaker Kathy Smith, past ODNR Forester and current OSU Forestry Program Director, will cover the options available to you as the seller, and give you tips on how to select a reputable buyer. Western Reserve Knitting Guild meets on Nov. 13
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will be meeting on Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building, Fair Park in Canfield. Begin the evening with a potluck dinner; members are to bring a favorite dish to share and the guild will provide drinks, plates and utensils. The meal begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. For this month’s program, a one-button cowl, you’ll need a skein of worsted or dk yarn and the appropriate needles The guild will provide the pattern and the group will be learning the German twisted cast-on. It’s a very stretchy cast on that begins the one button cowl. The highlight of the evening will be the group’s first fundraiser of the year. Guild members and guests will have the opportunity to purchase a button for their cowl. The guild will be hosting a trunk show featuring Dimensions Raku Fired Clay. There will be buttons, large and small, shawl pins and jewelry for your hand-knitted items. The Western Reserve Knitting Guild meets on the second Tuesday evening of each month at Fair Park and new members are welcome. Real estate association to have Nov. 12 meeting
The Mahoning Valley Real Estate Investors Association will meet on Nov.12 from 5:30-9 p.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center, located at 375 Canfield Poland Road, for its monthly meeting. Appraisals and house inspections are very important aspects of real estate investing. Coloring for grown-ups

The GREAT Library READ contest
Now that the GREAT American READ contest has ended, the Canfield library wants to find out what some of the favorites are locally. Simply vote for your favorite title from the list and they will see what you like best. One vote per person per day. One entry will be randomly selected to win a gift certificate prize. This event is for adults and teens. It will take place during regular hours throughout November.
Rubber stamped candles
Take a rubber stamp to tissue paper, color it with markers, then magically melt the design into a candle using a blow dryer at this event on Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Canfield library. This event is for tweens, ages 9-12 years.
Stephen King Constant Readers club
If you enjoy the master of suspense, join the Canfield library on Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss his riveting stories, as well as other captivating tales by his peers. This month they will dive into an informal discussion of “The Dark Tower,” the final book in the Dark Tower series, followed by a preview of new and exciting upcoming titles. Stikbot Makerspace
Bring your imagination to life with Stikbot at the Canfield library on Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m. Through stop motion photography and creative storytelling, a Stikbot can be whoever you want: a secret agent, a dragon-slaying knight or the next rock star. Tweens will use the free Stikbot Studio app, action figures and Legos. Using creativity and imagination, they will design their own stop-motion film by taking a number of still photos, and will add backgrounds and sound to make a movie short. Bring an iPhone, iPad or Android with the app loaded. This event is for ages 9-12.
Strategy board game night
Test your wits and strategic ability during game night at the Canfield library on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. Bring your friends and enjoy games of “Stratego,” “Ticket to Ride,” chess and “Risk,” or bring your own game in to share. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults and teens.

Cardinal Mooney to host annual eighth-grade day
Cardinal Mooney High School will host its annual eighth-grade day on Nov. 13 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie Street in Youngstown. Students currently in eighth grade from all area parochial, public and charter schools are invited to spend the day in classes ranging from computer science and math to art and theology. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Mill Creek ABWA to have anniversary meeting
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Nov. 13 anniversary meeting at A la Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include roast beef, southern baked chicken, sand trap potatoes, California blend vegetables, cole slaw, tossed salad, tomato, pepper and onion salad, rolls, coffee or tea and cake for dessert. A Night at the Oasis - a 1920’s murder mystery dinner
Join in with “A Night at the Oasis,” an original script 1920’s murder mystery dinner to benefit Camp Stambaugh, located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield. This event will take place on Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the dining hall at the camp. You will have your choice of one of three entrees - prime rib, chicken francese or crab-stuffed cod - along with salad, role and dessert. 1920’s dress is optional but suggested. Local retired teachers association to have Nov. 14 meeting
Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on Nov. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The American Legion will present colors in honor of Veteran’s Day. Scholarship chairperson Sonia Tsvetkoff will introduce and present MRTA’s scholarships to YSU School of Education students. Deana DeLuca will present a program on “Mindfulness and Meditation.” This month’s community service project will be donations to the Canfield Veterans Auxiliary. Friendly Squares dance in November
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles.
