AMS PTA hosts annual craft show
The Austintown Middle School Parent Teacher Association will host its 35th annual autumn craft show on Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m at Austintown Middle School, located at 800 S. Raccoon Road. The event will feature more than 170 vendors and 200 tables of crafts along with baked goods, raffles, concessions and a Chinese auction. Admission is free for this event. All proceeds will benefit the AMS PTA, who raises money for various opportunities at the middle school building.
Local church has sale
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, will be having the annual fall rummage sale in its parish center on Nov. 10 and 11 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be thousands of items, including books and clothing, a Chinese auction and a $1 bake sale. Sunday will be bargain day.
Theater has high-tea fundraiser
The Hopewell Theatre (formerly the Victorian Players) will host a Victorian High-Tea Fundraiser on Nov. 18 from 3-6 p.m., at the Piccadilly Parlour, located at 114 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support its handicap accessibility project. A luncheon will be served, beginning at 3:15 p.m. and will consist of a cup of soup (your choice), tea sandwiches, sweets and tea (or coffee). Entertainment by the Just Friends Community Chorus will begin at 4 p.m. Background music will be provided by Darlene and Joe MacBenn on harp and flute. There will be a live auction and a 50/50 raffle, all proceeds going to the handicap accessibility project. Door prizes will be awarded. Victorian dress is encouraged but, not necessary. Due to limited seating, reservations are required. The cost is $30 per person and $15 of the ticket price is tax deductible. Local chocolatier to lend hand to stop hunger
Gorant Chocolatier is “Lending a Hand to Stop Hunger” in the Mahoning Valley this holiday season by hosting its fourth annual food drive. Nov. 1-15, customers can donate non-perishable food items and receive 5 percent off their purchase for each item donated (up to 25 percent). Participating locations include their Boardman Factory location (8301 Market Street), and Gorant 224 location (1393 Boardman Canfield Road, Suite G). The most needed food items for this holiday season include boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned yams, canned vegetables and gravy mix. Playtime at your library
Read a story at the Austintown library on Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Pre-kindergarten story time
This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten every Wednesday in November at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library.
Shop for a Cause event to take place on Nov. 11
The Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance is hosting its annual Shop for a Cause event on Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Ivory & Birch, located at 7631 Market Street in Boardman. Real estate association to have Nov. 12 meeting
The Mahoning Valley Real Estate Investors Association will meet on Nov.12 from 5:30-9 p.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Family Community Center, located at 375 Canfield Poland Road, for its monthly meeting. Appraisals and house inspections are very important aspects of real estate investing. Western Reserve Knitting Guild meets on Nov. 13
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will be meeting on Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building, Fair Park in Canfield. Begin the evening with a potluck dinner; members are to bring a favorite dish to share and the guild will provide drinks, plates and utensils. The meal begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. For this month’s program, a one-button cowl, you’ll need a skein of worsted or dk yarn and the appropriate needles The guild will provide the pattern and the group will be learning the German twisted cast-on. It’s a very stretchy cast on that begins the one button cowl. The highlight of the evening will be the group’s first fundraiser of the year. Guild members and guests will have the opportunity to purchase a button for their cowl. The guild will be hosting a trunk show featuring Dimensions Raku Fired Clay. There will be buttons, large and small, shawl pins and jewelry for your hand-knitted items. The Western Reserve Knitting Guild meets on the second Tuesday evening of each month at Fair Park and new members are welcome. Santa at the library: reindeer games
Santa Claus is coming to the Austintown library on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. Come and see Santa and a live reindeer. Although Rudolph doesn’t have a shiny nose, he’ll be at the library with Santa and hiss sleigh. Take your picture with Santa, see his reindeer and enjoy hot cocoa and snacks in the meeting room. You can make a reindeer craft, play games and maybe listen to a reindeer story or two.

Get to know BiblioCommons, the library’s new enhanced catalog at this event on Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. Create your own account that allows you to place holds, renew items, create a list of books you want to read, rate titles, add reviews and more. It’s now a social media experience plus a catalog. Bring your own laptop, tablet or smart phone if you have one, or use one of our computers to get started. Registration is required. This event is for adults.
Financial Aid 101 with the Mahoning Valley College Access Program
This session, which will take place at the Austintown library on Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m. will break down the FAFSA process into easy steps and answer questions about the application itself. Participants will learn the difference between three types of financial aid - grants, loans and scholarships - and how to access them. Read to Reese

Stamping with Cindy
Learn to create your own handmade cards using stamps, punches and other fun tools at this event at the Austintown library on Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. and Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. Sign up to create each month’s greeting card with matching envelope. If you need some quiet “me time,” join the Austintown library for its silent book club on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. You can bring in your own book, grab one off the shelf or even read a digital book in a designated group quiet time. Friends of the Austintown Library meeting and presentation
Dr. Robert Marcus, U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, will present “Homeless Veterans: An Outreach Program” at the Austintown library on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. He has developed a community resource and referral center for the purpose of accessing services to provide optimal care for our homeless veterans. The Austintown Friends take book donations on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 10 a.m. until noon.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library every Tuesday in November at 10 a.m.

Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in November at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library on Nov. 15 and 29 at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Cardinal Mooney to host annual eighth-grade day
Cardinal Mooney High School will host its annual eighth-grade day on Nov. 13 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie Street in Youngstown. Students currently in eighth grade from all area parochial, public and charter schools are invited to spend the day in classes ranging from computer science and math to art and theology. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Mill Creek ABWA to have anniversary meeting
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Nov. 13 anniversary meeting at A la Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include roast beef, southern baked chicken, sand trap potatoes, California blend vegetables, cole slaw, tossed salad, tomato, pepper and onion salad, rolls, coffee or tea and cake for dessert. Local retired teachers association to have Nov. 14 meeting
Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on Nov. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The American Legion will present colors in honor of Veteran’s Day. Scholarship chairperson Sonia Tsvetkoff will introduce and present MRTA’s scholarships to YSU School of Education students. Deana DeLuca will present a program on “Mindfulness and Meditation.” This month’s community service project will be donations to the Canfield Veterans Auxiliary. Friendly Squares dance in November
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. The theme for the dance is Veterans. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season
The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Upcoming shows are: Dec. 7-15 - “Snoopy, the Musical,” Jan. 4-13 - “Sea Horse,” Feb. 15-24 - “Raisin in the Sun,” March 29-April 7 - “Godspell,” May 10-19 - “Deathtrap” and June 7-16 - “On Golden Pond.” Flex passes are on sale for six shows for $60 for adults and $42 for seniors/students.
