1960: Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy defeats Vice President Richard M. Nixon for the presidency.

1966: Edward W. Brooke, R-Mass., becomes the first black candidate to be elected to the U.S. Senate by popular vote.

1974: A federal judge in Cleveland dismisses charges against eight Ohio National Guardsmen accused of violating the civil rights of students who were killed or wounded in the 1970 Kent State shootings.

1993: An exhibit at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor commemorates the legacy of A. Philip Randolph in the labor and civil-rights movement. Randolph, who died in 1979 at 90, taught that citizens have a duty to be involved, says George Freeman of Youngstown, president of the Ohio chapter of the A. Philip Randolph Institute.

A group of seventh- and eighth-grade girls at Austintown Middle School form “The Glass Slippers,” a club that promotes equal rights for women and an environment in which Cinderella could marry a prince and run the kingdom if she wishes.

George Tablack, former state legislator for 20 years, is appointed Mahoning County administrator. He succeeds his son, Atty. William Tablack, who was killed in an auto crash.
