‘I’m Not That Girl’ at Rust Belt

Rust Belt Theater Company will present “I’m Not That Girl” at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Calvin Center, 755 Mahoning Ave, Youngstown. Tickets are $15 ($10 for students and senior citizens); call 330-507-2358 for reservations. An original musical revue that challenges traditional gender norms, “I’m Not That Girl” features original and popular music, and will be performed by Rust Belt Theater founder-playwright Robert Dennick Joki. All proceeds will benefit the Jude Mikulich Surgery Fund, for gender reassignment. Joki said he welcomes the opportunity to perform. “I’ve done the show twice before, each time benefitting a different cause,” he said. “I don’t get very many chances to perform because my job is to create performance opportunities for others. I especially don’t get to perform much of my own material. This is also an opportunity to raise money for something I believe in.” Rust Belt Theater, he said, advocates for transgender individuals and has already raised more than $1,000 this year for the Mikulich fund. Joki said he has added updates to the musical, which premiered in 2009 to critical acclaim.
