Terps fire two trainers who treated McNair

COLLEGE PARK, Md.

The University of Maryland has fired two trainers that were involved in the treatment of Jordan McNair after he collapsed on the field and subsequently died of heatstroke.

Maryland has not formally announced the decision and has never named the trainers placed on paid leave. However, person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press in August that football athletic trainer Wes Robinson and director of athletic training Steve Nordwall had been placed on leave following McNair’s death.

Athletic department spokesman Dustin Semonavick said Wednesday, “The trainers that were previously on administrative leave are no longer employed at the university.”

Head coach DJ Durkin was fired last week.

Kevin Harvick stripped of NASCAR title berth

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Kevin Harvick has been stripped of his berth in NASCAR’s championship race because his winning car failed inspection after Texas Motor Speedway.

NASCAR said Wednesday the discovery made after Harvick’s win negates the automatic berth he earned into the finale. The No. 4 had an illegal spoiler.

The rule in question states that spoilers must be used exactly as supplied from the manufacturer and not altered. The infraction was discovered when NASCAR gave the car a further inspection in North Carolina.

Harvick won Sunday’s race to join Joey Logano in next weekend’s championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Now, three spots will be up for grabs this Sunday in Phoenix.

NASCAR’s Truex moves to Gibbs with crew chief

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

NASCAR champion Martin Truex Jr. and his crew chief will move to Joe Gibbs Racing next season to remain in the Toyota organization after their race team folds in two weeks.

Truex won his first Cup title last year driving for Furniture Row Racing. Barney Visser had funded the team out of pocket for most of its existence but received relief help the last few seasons from sponsorship.

When the primary sponsor of the No. 78 decided to leave NASCAR and Visser couldn’t find a replacement, the owner decided to close because he found it too expensive to field a championship-contending team without outside funding.

Truex will replace Daniel Suarez as driver of the No. 19 team.
