Quentin Grimes scored 21 points in his college debut and Dedric Lawson added 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead Kansas past Michigan State in the season-opening Champions Classic. The Jayhawks won their third straight in one of college basketball’s premier events. Michigan State was led by Joshua Langford with 18 points and Kenny Goins with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Spartans are now 4-21 all-time against No. 1 teams
No. 5 Virginia 73, Towson 42
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.
Ty Jerome scored 20 points and De’Andre Hunter had 13 and 10 rebounds as Virginia beat Towson. Jerome made six 3-pointers for the Cavaliers (1-0), who were playing for the first time since they made history by becoming the first No. 1 seed to lose to a 16-seed in the NCAA Tournament. That 74-54 loss to UMBC last March, they insisted leading into the opener, was the furthest thing from their mind. Tobias Howard made three 3-pointers and led Towson (0-1) with 10 points and Brian Fobbs had nine.
No. 6 Tennessee 86, Lenoir-Rhyne 41
KNOXVILLE, TENN.
Jordan Bone scored 18 points and Kyle Alexander added 16 as Tennessee opened the season with a victory over Lenoir-Rhyne. Tennessee coach Rick Barnes lettered for three seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne. Barnes is a native of Hickory, North Carolina, where Lenoir-Rhyne is located. The game against the Division II opponent counts on Tennessee’s overall record, but Lenoir-Rhyne counted the game as an exhibition. In front of a crowd of 16,156, the Volunteers (1-0) opened a season of heightened expectations.
No. 9 Villanova 100, Morgan State 77
VILLANOVA, PA.
Eric Paschall scored 26 points, Phil Booth had 17 as Villanova opened its national championship defense with a victory. The Wildcats have won 12 straight games dating to last season and won their 16th consecutive season opener. The new kid on the block that shone the most was the refurbished Pavilion, which closed for a season and forced the Wildcats to play a year in Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center.
No. 8 North Carolina 78, Wofford 67
SPARTANBURG, S.C.
Luke Maye had 24 points, Cameron Johnson provided a huge spark in the second half and North Carolina avenged an upset loss to Wofford last year to tip off the regular season. Johnson made five 3-pointers and had 17 points along with eight rebounds. Garrison Brooks added 20 as the Tar Heels improved to 15-1 in season openers under coach Roy Williams. Maye, the ACC preseason player of the year, finished 7 of 13 from the field and 8 of 9 from the foul line.
No. 16 Syracuse 66, Eastern Washington 34
SYRACUSE, N.Y.
Oshae Brissett had 20 points and eight rebounds, No. 16 Syracuse held Eastern Washington to 22 percent shooting, and the Orange overpowered the Eagles. The Eagles’ output was the lowest since the Carrier Dome opened in 1980. Eight players scored for Syracuse, which played without starting point guard Frank Howard. Bourama Sidibe and Tyus Battle each had eight, while Marek Dolezaj, Jalen Carey and Elijah Hughes had seven apiece. Tyler Kidd led the Eagles with nine points. Jack Perry, the Eagles leading 3-point shooter a year ago, had three points and shot 1 of 4 from 3.
No. 22 Clemson 100, The Citadel 80

Marcquise Reed had 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds as No. 22 Clemson beat The Citadel reached 100 points for the first time in nine years. The Tigers (1-0) last hit the century mark in a 102-66 win over Winthrop in November 2009. They reached triple digits for the first time in coach Brad Brownell’s nine seasons on the way to their 34th straight season-opening win. Reed led six Tigers in double figures and posted his fourth career double-double. Shelton Mitchell and Aamir Simms scored 16 points each, Elijah Thomas had 15, Clyde Trapp 13 and David Skara 11.
No. 24 Purdue 90, Fairfield 57
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.
Carsen Edwards scored 30 points and made seven 3-pointers as Purdue opened its season with a victory. Purdue made just one of its first seven shots but shot 54 percent. More impressively, the Boilermakers made 14 of 30 from 3-point range and hit eight 3-pointers in the first half. The Boilermakers went on separate 14-0 and 7-0 runs in the first half and built a comfortable 17-point halftime edge. They consistently shut down Fairfield on defense and coasted to their first victory of the year. Forward Grady Eifert was tapped for just his third career start but led the Boilermakers on the boards with 10 rebounds. Purdue outrebounded Fairfield by a 40-25 margin.
Davidson 83, Cleveland State 63
DAVIDSON, N.C.
Kellan Grady made five 3-pointers and scored 24 points to help Davidson open the season with a win over Cleveland State. Grady, who begins the season on the Wooden Award watch list, made 5 of 11 from 3-point range and grabbed seven boards for the Wildcats. Jon Axel Gudmundsson added 16 points and seven assists, and Luke Frampton and Luka Brajkovic scored 10 points each.
Akron 70, Cedarville 50
AKRON
Channel Banks scored nine of his 15 points in the second half when Akron pulled away from Cedarville for a victory in the Zips’ season opener. Akron led only 31-29 after a first half that saw five lead changes and six ties. Banks opened up the second half with a 3-pointer and the Zips would keep the lead, going up by 22 with 5:24 remaining after a 13-0 run that included two 3-pointers from Banks. A Jeremy Roscoe 3-pointer gave the Zips their largest lead of 26 with 3:40 to go. Banks made 4 of 6 from the arc with the Zips sinking 11 3-pointers. Loren Cristian Jackson added 14 points with four 3-pointers while Jimond Ivey had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Notre Dame 84, UIC 67
SOUTH BEND, IND.
Freshmen Nate Laszewski, Robby Carmody and Dane Goodwin were among five Notre Dame players to score in double figures as the youthful Fighting Irish cruised by Illinois-Chicago. The 6-foot-10 Laszewski led the way with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. Carmody — who became the first freshman to start an opener for Notre Dame since Torin Francis in 2002 — added 11 points in 14 minutes. Goodwin finished with 10 points. Junior John Mooney and sophomore D.J. Harvey also scored 10.
Indiana 104, Chicago State 55
BLOOMINGTON, IND.
Romeo Langford got the starting nod from Indiana coach Archie Miller and scored a team-high 19 points in his collegiate debut to lead the Hoosiers to a win over Chicago State. The highly coveted McDonald’s All-American from New Albany, Indiana scored the his first career point for Indiana from the foul line to extend the Hoosiers’ lead in a game where they trailed just once, for a total of 13 seconds. The state of Indiana’s reigning Mr. Basketball Award winner split another pair of free throws before he finally made his first field goal with about nine minutes left in the first half.
Boston College 73, Milwaukee 53
BOSTON
Ky Bowman scored 19 points with eight rebounds, freshman Wynston Tabbs scored 16 in his college debut and Boston College shook off a 13-point, second-half deficit to beat Milwaukee. Steffon Mitchell had 14 rebounds for the Eagles, one off his career high. It was the season opener for both teams. Darius Roy scored 15 points and Amir Allen grabbed 11 rebounds for Milwaukee, which led 40-27 after making the first basket of the second half. The Panthers made two of their next 26 shots over the next 14 minutes, turning a 13-point lead into a 59-48 deficit. Bowman scored 15 in the second half.
