Fitch graduate Hall earns Camp award

PITTSBURGH

Pitt senior tailback Darrin Hall has been named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Panthers’ 23-13 win at Virginia.

Facing a nationally ranked Virginia defense that was yielding only 113 rushing yards per game, the Austintown Fitch High School graduate more than doubled that total on his own. He rambled for 229 yards and three touchdowns on just 19 carries (12.1 avg.) and was not dropped for a loss the entire game.

Hall’s touchdown runs covered 41, 2 and 75 yards, the last giving the Panthers a 20-13 advantage in the final quarter.

The victory lifted Pitt into first place in the ACC’s Coastal Division with a 4-1 mark. In defeating the No. 23/22 Cavs, Pitt also scored its first road win over a ranked foe since its 2016 upset of eventual national champion Clemson (ranked No. 3/2 at the time).

On the season, Hall has rushed for 658 yards and seven touchdowns on 89 carries (7.4 avg.). He is the seventh player since 2004 to be selected the Walter Camp National Player of the Week,.

Cavs increase contract for head coach Drew

CLEVELAND

Larry Drew’s awkward impasse with the Cleveland Cavaliers is over.

The team’s struggles are getting worse.

The Cavs relented to Drew’s requests by restructuring his contract and signing him to be their coach for the remainder of this season — and perhaps beyond.

Drew and his agent, Andy Miller, had been negotiating since the Cavs’ top assistant asked for security and guarantees if he was going to become the rebuilding team’s interim coach and replace Tyronn Lue, who was fired on Oct. 28 following a 0-6 start. Drew wanted a pay raise to finish out the season and got one.

Drew’s new deal includes a team option for the 2019-20 season. If the Cavs choose not to retain him, Drew will receive a buyout payment.

Ramirez, Kluber are nominees

NEW YORK

Shohei Ohtani is a finalist for the AL Rookie of the Year award along with two New York Yankees infielders.

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America revealed the finalists for its major awards Monday night. The winners will be announced next week.

Ohtani figures to be in a tight race with Yankees infielders Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres after a historic first season with the Los Angeles Angels.

The World Series champion Boston Red Sox might be in line for more hardware. Mookie Betts is a finalist for AL MVP, and Alex Cora is in the final three for AL Manager of the Year in his first season. Los Angeles’ Mike Trout and Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez are also finalists for AL MVP.

Corey Kluber has a shot at a second straight AL Cy Young Award and third overall. The Cleveland right-hander is up against Tampa Bay’s Blake Snell and Houston’s Justin Verlander, who won the AL Cy Young and MVP Awards in 2011.
