YSU volleyball team celebrates seniors
YOUNGSTOWN
The Youngstown State volleyball team battled Illinois-Chicago on Senior Day before falling in four sets in the 2018 Beeghly Center finale on Sunday. The set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-14.
The Penguins split a pair of two-point sets and held a 12-9 lead in the third this time. YSU, though, couldn’t keep up with the Flames offensively over the final two sets. Both teams had 30 kills in the first two sets, but UIC had a 34-15 edge over the final two sets.
Margaux Thompson led the Penguins with 10 kills and 11 digs, and Aleah Hughes posted 17 digs. Senior Morgan Tippie tied her season high with eight kills in her final home match, and fellow senior Sarah Varcolla registered six kills and five blocks. Varcolla became just the fourth Penguin in history to reach 100 blocks in three straight seasons.
YSU bowlers finish 11th in Texas
HOUSTON
The Youngstown State bowling team finished 11th on Sunday in the Track Kat Klash at Emerald Lanes.
YSU lost a seven-game battle with No. 17 Louisiana Tech in the opening round of the day with game seven being decided by 16 pins. The Penguins totaled a 221 in game six, which tied for their second-highest single-game total of the day.
The second match was against No. 23 Monmouth, and YSU won the first game before dropping the next three to fall behind 3-1. The Penguins extended the match with a 166-144 win in game five before falling 168-152 in the sixth.
In the match to decide 11th and 12th, YSU rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat Maryville in six games.
Girard to sell tickets for Perry football game
GIRARD
Tickets for Saturday’s Girard-Perry regional football game will be on sale at Girard Arrowhead stadium from Wednesday through Friday from noon-4 p.m. Wednesday.
The game will be played at Ashtabula Lakeside Stadium. Advance tickets cost $8, a dollar less than at the gate.
Fowler’s hat trick too much for Jackets
ANAHEIM, Calif.
Cam Fowler completed his first career hat trick by scoring 36 seconds into overtime to help the Anaheim Ducks end a seven-game losing streak, 3-2 over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday night.
John Gibson made 24 saves for the Ducks, who had been 0-5-2 since defeating the New York Islanders 4-1 on Oct. 17.
Pierre-Luc Dubois scored twice for the Blue Jackets, who lost the final two games of their three-game California road trip. Joonas Korpisalo made 27 saves.
Fowler scored on a one-timer from Adam Henrique to end Anaheim’s losing skid. It was Fowler’s 56th career goal, tying Francois Beauchemin for second-most by a Anaheim defenseman all-time.
Dubois earned a point for Columbus by scoring with 31.3 seconds remaining in the third period to tie the game at 2.
The Ducks went in front 2-1 at 18:26 of the second period on Fowler’s second goal of the season, a wrist shot into the top netting.
Fowler tied it at 1 at 9:09 during 4-on-4 play. Rakell lost the puck skating past two Columbus defenders, but it went through the slot to Fowler for a shot into an open net.
Fowler has three goals and two assists during a three-game point streak.
The Blue Jackets took a 1-0 lead at 3:33 of the second period when Dubois scored on a wrist shot from the right circle that went between Gibson’s legs. Dubois had just come out of the penalty box after serving his third minor penalty of the game before getting his fifth goal of the season.
