Mount Union’s Fuline to speak to Curbstone
BEAVER TOWNSHIP
Mike Fuline, Mount Union men’s basketball head coach, will be the guest speaker at Monday’s meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road.
The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.
Applications are being accepted for nominations for the 2019 Hall of Fame Class that will be inducted on May 5. For an application to nominate, call 330-506-6774 or 330-792-2272. Application deadline is Nov. 17.
Malone scores twice in Phantoms’ victory
YOUNGSTOWN
Jack Malone scored two goals as the Youngstown Phantoms (3-6-0-2) beat the Central Illinois Flying Aces 4-1 on Saturday night at Covelli Centre.
Malone’s first goal came on his deflection of a Matt DeMelis wrister in the second period to break a 1-1 tie.
Brett Murray and Joey Abate also scored for the Phantoms. Malone added the final goal.
Jeremy Davidson’s first-period goal gave Central Illinois a short-lived 1-0 lead in the first period.
The teams will meet again Monday at a 10 a.m. in the Phantoms’ annual school day game.
YSU bowlers go 3-1 at Track Kat Klash
HOUSTON
Youngstown State won three more head-to-head matches and had all five of its bowlers individually place in the top 50 as it competed in five team games in the Track Kat Klash on Saturday at Sam Houston State.
The Penguins will enter today’s bracket play sitting 10th overall after totaling 8,994 pins over the first two days at the tournament held at Emerald Lanes.
Following wins over three top-20 teams en route to a 3-2 record in Baker play on Friday, YSU was eight pins from going undefeated on Saturday. YSU’s only loss on the day was a close 945-938 defeat to No. 6 Stephen F. Austin in the third match of the day. YSU earned wins over Maryville (840-810), No. 25 Texas Southern (956-867) and Alabama State (917-879), and the Penguins posted a 913 against the bye.
Emily Dietz was the top individual finisher (22nd) for the Penguins as she posted a 967 for an average of 193.4. She bowled at least 190 in each of the last four games, and she topped out at 225 in the bye round. Emma Dockery finished two spots back in 24th with a 963, and she had the Penguins’ top single-game score with a 244 in the win over Texas Southern.
Chris Woodward hired as Rangers manager
ARLINGTON, TEXAS
The Texas Rangers have hired Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Chris Woodward as their manager, six weeks after Jeff Banister was fired.
The team said Saturday he received a three-year contract with a club option for 2022. He is to be introduced at news conference Monday.
The hiring ends a process during which general manager Jon Daniels and the Rangers interviewed more than 10 candidates, including bench coach Don Wakamatsu.
Minor leaguer killed, 2 injured in car crash
CINCINNATI
Pitcher Jairo Capellan was killed and two other Cincinnati Reds minor leaguers were injured in a car accident Saturday morning in the Dominican Republic, a team official said.
Dick Williams, the Reds’ president of baseball operations, confirmed Capellan’s death and said pitcher Raul Hernandez was in critical condition and outfielder Emilio Garcia in stable condition. The club released no details about their injuries.
Capellan was 19, the same age as the two injured players. All three played on the Reds’ rookie team in the Dominican Summer League.
Capellan completed his first year in professional baseball, going 2-3 in 18 relief appearances. Hernandez has played on the rookie team each of the last two years and went 2-4 with a 2.29 ERA in 13 starts this season. Garcia batted .205 with no homers and 11 RBIs in his first professional season.
