Boardman High School recently announced that three of their seniors have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program for the 2018-19 school year.
Sophia McGee and Ryan Coldren have been named Commended Students. Daniel Turillo is a National Merit Semifinalist, who will go on to compete for substantial scholarship money this spring.
As a semifinalist, Turillo is among less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, and is included among the highest scoring entrants in each state. Turillo is president his senior class, a member of National Honor Society, a leader of the 4-year-long undefeated Quiz Bowl team and a member of the marching and jazz bands, as well as orchestra.
“I am looking into pursuing political science or history in some way,” said Turillo. “Ohio State and the University of Chicago are my top college choices right now.”
As Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program, McGee and Coldren are among 34,000 students across the nation who are recognized for their exceptional academic progress.
McGee is a varsity runner on the cross country and track teams, plays in the band and is active as a member of Emerging Leaders, Ocean Bowl and Envirothon.
“I plan on advocating for and working to further environmental conservation in college and beyond,” said McGee. “My career is unclear as I could choose environmental policy, biology, engineering or other paths to help the planet.”
Coldren is active in the College Credit Plus program as a senior, spending most of his time at YSU earning college credit and preparing for his future.
