Indians, Martin agree to $3M, one-year deal

CLEVELAND

Outfielder Leonys Martin has agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Cleveland Indians months after he survived a life-threatening illness.

Martin and the club avoided salary arbitration Wednesday with the deal.

The 30-year-old was obtained by the Indians last season in a trade before the July non-waiver deadline from Detroit. Shortly after he arrived, Martin contracted a serious bacterial infection that affected his vital organs. Martin’s condition rapidly worsened before doctors were able to treat and destroy the infection.

Martin played in just six games for the Indians.

The Indians are confident Martin will be ready for the start of training camp.

Martin batted .255 with 11 homers and 33 RBIs in 84 games for the Tigers and Indians.

Price says he’s staying with Series champs

BOSTON

Boston Red Sox left-hander David Price will stay with the team he led to a World Series title.

He announced on the field at Fenway Park before a victory parade Wednesday he was declining a contract option that would have enabled him to become a free agent.

He says he came to Boston to win and that’s what the Red Sox did.

Price will earn $127 million over the next four years under the seven-year, $217 million contract he signed with Boston before the 2016 season. He has gone 31-19 with a 3.74 ERA in three seasons with the Red Sox. This October, he finally pitched like an ace in the postseason as well.

Russia’s Dalaloyan wins men’s all-around

DOHA, Qatar

Artur Dalaloyan of Russia won the men’s world all-around gymnastics title, edging China’s Xiao Ruoteng during a taut and tense final on Wednesday.

Dalaloyan and Xiao, the 2017 all-around champion, both finished with a total of 87.598. Dalaloyan was awarded the gold medal after officials dropped the lowest score.

Dalaloyan’s teammate Nikita Nagornyy took bronze with a total of 86.331.

On the women’s side, the juggernaut led by Simone Biles keeps right on rolling, kidney stone or no kidney stone.

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team cruised to a gold medal at the world gymnastics championships Tuesday, extending a run of dominance that only seems to be picking up momentum.

The Americans had a team score of 171.629 in winning their fourth straight world title, well clear of silver medalist Russia and bronze medalist China.

Biles, the reigning Olympic champion, is dealing with a kidney stone diagnosed last week and is attempting to fight through the pain.
