EAST PALESTINE

The Friends of the East Palestine Memorial Public Library will host a book sale Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The book sale will be located in the basement of the library, 309 North Market St., and features gently used hardback and paperback books, books on tape, games, puzzles, magazines and DVDs. The fiction books are organized alphabetically by author and the non-fiction books are organized by category. Call the library at 330-426-3778 with questions.

History presentation

John Raica, commander of Hubbard American Legion Post 51, will give the 15th presentation of the Cuban Missile Crisis at 9:05 a.m. Monday at the Penn State Shenango campus. The presentation is for students and faculty of Penn State Shenango.

Ward-Thomas House to be open Sunday

The Niles Historical Society will sponsor its November open house of the Ward-Thomas House at 503 Brown St. on Sunday from 2 to 5 with the last tour starting at 4. A membership meeting will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Westenfield Room. Clocks from member Pete Sciullo’s collection of Ansonia clocks from the 1800s and 1900s will be on display in the house throughout November and December.

Calendars featuring “Early Schools in Niles” will be available for sale this year for $10. Shipping also is available for an additional fee. Orders may be placed by calling 330-652-8329.

Plans for McKinley Christmas on Dec. 8 from noon to 4 p.m. are being made. This will take place in conjunction with the McKinley Birthplace Home, McKinley Memorial Library and McKinley Museum, with activities planned at each location. The trolley will transport patrons among the sites. The Ward-Thomas House will have crafts for children, special stories and refreshments as well as tours of the house, which will be decorated for Christmas.

Member Ralph Tolbert will give a talk on “Remembering WWI and the Niles Connection” at the McKinley Birthplace Home on Saturday at 1 p.m. Those in attendance will learn of Niles and its citizens’ involvement in the war.

Cub Scouts sponsor coat drive

Cub Scout Pack 2006 of Salem is sponsoring a coat drive until Nov. 18. The troop is accepting new and gently used cold-weather clothing such as coats, hats, gloves, scarves, etc. All donations will be given to The Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley and other places of need in the community depending on the outcome of the drive.

Drop-off locations are at the Local 396 Plumbers and Pipefitters Hall, 493 Bev Rd., Youngstown, and the Salem Community Center and Centerplex, 1098 N Ellsworth Ave., Salem. The Scouts also will be taking donations Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. They also will sell Christmas ornaments. For information, contact Kaitlin Hause at kaithause@gmail.com.

School band will host concert

AUSTINTOWN

Austintown Middle School bands and the Austintown Fitch High School marching band will pay tribute to veterans by hosting a Veterans’ Day concert at 5 p.m. Nov. 11 (Veterans’ Day) at the Fitch Gymnasium, 4560 Falcon Dive.

Before the concert, the Austintown Board of Education will host its seventh annual Chili Cook Off at 2 p.m. in the cafeteria. Local restaurants, businesses, groups and residents will compete. The event is open to the public. Chili cookers are limited to 20 entrants and must register at the band’s website afband.org or email at austintownbandparent@gmail.com.

Home Savings presents check to parks

Frank Hierro, Mahoning Valley Regional President of Home Savings, recently presented a check in the amount of $12,500 to Mill Creek MetroParks. The funds were used for the Installation of Dasher Boards at the Mill Creek Dek Hockey Rink.

Relay For Life meetings set in Canfield
