1972: President Richard M. Nixon and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev sign the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in Moscow. (The U.S. withdrew from the treaty in 2002.)

2013: President George W. Bush pays a Memorial Day tribute to America’s fighting men and women who died in battle, saying national leaders must have “the courage and character to follow their lead” in preserving peace and freedom.

2017: President Donald Trump, attending a G-7 meeting in Sicily, vows to crush “evil organizations of terror” after an attack on Coptic Christians that killed at least 28 people near Cairo, Egypt.

1993: The Mahoning County Board of Elections certifies the one-vote victory of Anna Marie Namath over incumbent Ronald S. Sefcik in the Democratic primary for Youngstown’s 4th Ward. There will be a recount in the 1,068 to 1,067 race.

The Ohio Legislature is considering legislation to merge the Struthers and Campbell municipal courts which each cost about $50,000 in 1992.

Five former employees and retirees of GF Corp. file suit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court claiming that they, other employees, widows and dependents have been illegally denied life insurance and major medical coverage.

1978: After a 79-day trial and 33 hours of jury deliberation, Ronald Carabbia of Poland is found guilty of aggravated murder in the car-bomb death of Cleveland rackets figure Daniel Greene.

Bruce Stevenson, 24, of Portersville, Pa., and Barbara J . Black, 15, of New Castle, are killed when their motorcycle traveling at high speed slams into the back of a truck on Route 108 in Hickory Township.

Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. files a request with the Mahoning County Board of Tax Revision to decrease its real-estate taxes by more than 50 percent.

1968: The Seventh Annual Art Fair of the Jewish Community Center opens, dedicated to Ed Perkins, late curator of the Butler Institute of American Art.

The Lawrence County Area Vocational Technical School graduates its first class of 211 students. The $3.7 million building has an enrollment of 780.

Ernest S. DeMatteo is promoted by Mayor Joseph Baldine to chief of Hubbard’s Police Department, which has nine full- and part-time officers and four dispatchers.

1943: Esther Yochman, 15, of Berlin Township is killed and a neighbor, Pauline Peterchak, 15, is injured when the bicycle they were riding was struck by a Civilian Defense worker who was driving without headlights during the Valley-wide blackout exercise.

Samuel Woods, 38, a boarder at 1810 Wilson Ave., is shot and killed and two other men suffer serious knife wounds from an attacker who escaped. Police believe the shooting was precipitated by an argument over a dice game.

Mrs. and Mrs. Edward Gilronan return to Youngstown from St. Joseph’s College in Collegeville, Ind., where they attended commencement exercises during which their son, John Keehner, graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree.
