Zallow advances to prelim quarterfinals

Tampa, Fla.

Youngstown State junior Chad Zallow placed ninth overall in the 110m hurdles in the first round at the NCAA East Preliminary at the USF Track and Field Stadium.

The Warren JFK graduate ran 13.78 seconds in the third heat.

Zallow is one of 24 runners who will now compete on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. with a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the line. The top 12 finishers — top three from each heat and next three fastest times — will advance to the semifinals in Eugene, Oregon.

Today, Tyler Donati will compete in the javelin and Struthers graduate Arnaldo Morales in the high jump. Donati is set to throw at 1:30 p.m. while Morales starts at 2 p.m.

Bucks’ Sterling Brown ‘gave in’ during arrest

MILWAUKEE

Milwaukee Bucks’ Sterling Brown said Friday he “gave in” when police used a stun gun as they detained him for a parking violation because he didn’t want officers to “pull out their guns.”

An officer had approached Brown because he was double-parked in a handicap spot and the interaction quickly escalated. The officer called for backup as the conversation with Brown became tense and a half-dozen squad cars responded.

Brown said didn’t expect the situation to escalate, but at one point after backup arrived, Brown was surrounded by four officers. One of them asked him to take his hands out of his pockets and a scuffle immediately ensued. Within seconds, one officer yelled “Taser! Taser! Taser!.”

Three officers involved in the arrest were disciplined, with suspensions ranging from two to 15 days. Eight others will undergo remedial training in professional communications.

Huskers to honor Frank Solich at event

OMAHA, Neb.

Ohio football coach Frank Solich will return to Nebraska this winter to receive the Tom Osborne Legacy Award.

The Football Writers Association of America announced Friday that Solich would be honored during the Outland Trophy banquet in Omaha on Jan. 9.

Solich was an All-Big Eight fullback at Nebraska in the 1960s, a longtime assistant to Osborne and a winner of better than 75 percent of his games as head coach from 1998-2003.

The Tom Osborne Legacy Award is presented to a person who, in part, exhibits the integrity, sportsmanship and fair play associated with Osborne, the Hall of Fame coach who led the Huskers to 255 wins and three national titles in 25 seasons.

Houston rules Paul out for Game 6 vs Warriors

HOUSTON

Houston’s Chris Paul will miss Game 6 of the Western Conference finals against the Golden State Warriors tonight because of a hamstring injury.

Paul was injured in the fourth quarter of Houston’s win over the Warriors on Thursday night. The win gave the Rockets a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Rockets say Paul’s strained right hamstring will be re-evaluated after the team returns to Houston.

Civils rights activists rally outside of NFL HQ

NEW YORK

Civil rights activists gathered outside of NFL headquarters and called on team owners to overturn a new policy aimed at stopping player protests during the national anthem. They also encouraged a boycott of the league and its sponsors.

About 50 people gathered Friday at the office building in midtown Manhattan that houses the NFL for a rally organized by National Action Network, a civil rights nonprofit organization.

Kirsten John Foy, the Northeast Regional Director for NAN, was the first of 10 speakers. They criticized NFL team owners and President Donald Trump.

Foy says “Our demand is that the NFL reverse that immoral and unconstitutional decision.”

The NFL owners voted Wednesday to require players to stand for the national anthem or stay in the locker room. Teams will be fined if players don’t stand.
