The Canfield 4th of July Committee is working on the plans for this year’s festivities and recently announced that the 2018 parade float awards will include cash prizes.

The committee has annually awarded certificates to the top four floats, judged by three independent Canfield citizens and this year the certificates will include monetary awards.

July 4 begins early with the Firecracker4 Mile Run. Register ahead of time by visiting www.canfield4thofjuly.com. There is a link to the online race form on the home page. Registration will also be taken at the Township Hall on the Green beginning at 7:30 a.m. on the fourth. The children’s race around the Green starts at 8:15 a.m. in front of Farmers National Bank. The Firecracker 4 Mile takes off at 8:30 a.m., the starting line is in front of the Canfield United Methodist Church. This race is run on a familiar course, through the streets of Canfield.

Parade participants line up early at the Fairgrounds with committee members and countless volunteers helping the floats, bands, antique cars and local and state dignitaries find their parade placement. At precisely 10:10 a.m., parade starters Jim Queen and Mark Sabol launch the Canfield 4th of July Parade. Led by Police Chief Chuck Colucci and Fire Chief Don Hutchison, the parade heads north on Broad Street and winds around the Green, passing by the reviewing stand.

Following the parade, stop by the gazebo for an eclectic set of classic Americana/rock n’ roll sounds of Mike Cruz, Canfield graduate now living in Denver. There are also games and bounce-arounds for the children on the north Green, including a petting zoo, all organized by committee member Courtney Larson. There is also a climbing wall and a dunk tank where you can dunk your favorite Canfield Police officer.

Of course, you’ll want to stop by the food court for a delicious variety of sandwiches, fries and cold drinks, with all proceeds benefitting local non-profit organizations.

“It’s a tradition we are so proud to carry on,” says Committee Chair Enid Maldonado. “The year of preparation is definitely worth it to see so many people enjoy this celebration of our country’s independence.”
