Rock out with the Green Team

Rock out with Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team, as they present a Sesame Street book titled “From Trash to Treasure” by Liza Alexander on June 20 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. After reading the story, you will be able create musical instruments from recovered material and join in the band to play the ever popular Recycle Rap! This event is for children of all ages.

Bonding with babies and books

This event, offered every Tuesday at 10 a.m. in June at the Boardman library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Shake, shimmy and make

Make a musical instrument and more during regular hours at the Boardman library throughout June. This event is for rock and rollers of all ages..

I Read YA book club

This book club is for adult fans of Young Adult Literature. Talk about why you like YA, and read and discuss your latest finds. The next meeting will take place on June 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. They will be reading ““Turtles All the Way Down” by John Green.

Reader’s Choice book club

Share your favorite books and find out which new ones are being published on June 11 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. They will discuss “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. This event is for adults.

Puzzle Swap

Swap six of your once done jigsaw puzzles with others on June 13 at 4 p.m. at the Boardman library. This is offered every second Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library at 4 p.m. For more information, call the development office at 330-740-6086. This event is for adults.

Fundraiser to benefit F5RS

Chipotle, located at 525 Boardman Poland Road in Boardman, will host a fundraiser to support F5RS on May 26 from 4-8 p.m. Tell the cashier that you’re supporting the cause to make sure that 50 percent of the proceeds will be donated to F5RS.

Camping stories, s’mores and more

Camping stories, songs, games and knot-tying activities will be offered at the Boardman library on June 14 at 7 p.m. for preschool and school-age children. A s’mores snack and craft activity will be provided in this one- hour program. Preschoolers must attend with an adult.

Night market to begin in June

The Mission Night Market inaugural year festivities will occur at the Huntington Place plaza, located at 1393 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, on the second Friday of every month June through October, from 6-10 p.m. These dates are June 8, July 13, Aug. 10, Sept. 14 and Oct. 12. Proceeds to benefit Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. Vendors spots are available for $50 per 10 by 10 tent space and $100 for food trucks and the several 10 by 20 tent spaces. However, participation is by application process. MNM Committee limits the overall number and type of vendors for each event and vendors must be approved to participate. Sounds of science with the Armstrong Air and Space Museum

Gain an understanding of the makeup of sounds on Earth and in space at this program at 2 p.m. on June 11 at the Boardman library. You will be able to explore music using Boomwhackers, which use different lengths of tubes to display different notes of music. You’ll also have a chance to explore, tinker and create your own music. This program is for children of all ages.

Family story time

Bring the whole family for stories, games, crafts and fun for all ages at the Boardman library at 10 a.m. on June 6 and 27.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on June 9 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting

Help plan and support teen activities at the library at the next TAB meeting on June 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome.

Family story time for Father’s Day

Join the Boardman library on June 13 at 10 a.m. for stories and fun for children of all ages. Parents are invited to join their children in this 30- minute program. This event will include holiday stories and a gift for dad. Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital at the Boardman library on June 25 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

There will be a blood pressure screening by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Boardman library on June 4 from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Memorial Mile to take place on May 28

The 28th annual Memorial Mile running road race will take place on May 28 at 9:35 a.m. in Boardman. Some of the best runners in the area will compete for gift certificates and awards in 14 age groups. Runners ages 11 and under are free (no T-shirt) with pre-registration by May 18. The entry fee is $10 in advance for all others and $13 day of race for everyone. The race starts at State Routes 224 and 7. Day of race registration and packets can be picked up at the Walgreens located at State Routes 224 and 7. It is sponsored by Walgreens, 910 Rapid Care, Coke, the DeBartolo Corporation, Armstrong, Novak and Davis Insurance, and other local businesses. For more information, call 330-757-7424.

Leave no soldier behind: finding family members in uniform

Explore the records of the armed forces at the Boardman library on May 31 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Learn how to pursue personnel files and unit histories in order to understand your ancestor’s role in defending our nation’s heritage. All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 27 and on Memorial Day, May 28.

Tales & Talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Boardman library on Wednesdays during May at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Register for Summer Discovery beginning on May 1

Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” It will run from May 1 until July 31. Sign up and receive a coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers ticket voucher. Children who complete the program have the chance to have breakfast with Marc Brown, author/illustrator of the “Arthur” series. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 22 will be invited to a breakfast event on July 27, sponsored by Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC. Teens and adults can also participate in Summer Discovery by reading books to earn prizes and earn a chance to win a gift card.

Students perform spring concert

The fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade bands at the Boardman Middle Schools will present a spring band concert on May 31 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center. Admission/donations accepted at the door: adults - $3, students - $2 and senior citizens are admitted free of charge.

Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank

On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $35. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Park to host day camp during summer

Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will soon begin. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginations, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. The curriculum is designed to be age appropriate, educational and fun as the children participate in a daily schedule of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. Adventure Day Camp will run for 10 weeks, starting on June 11 and running through Aug. 17. The Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later for an additional charge. Registration begins on April 2. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
