Redeemer Lutheran Church VBS has “On the Farm” theme

Redeemer Lutheran Church will host its annual Vacation Bible School for children who are ages 3-12 on July 18-20 from 9 a.m. until noon. The theme will be “On the Farm.” The program will take place at the Mahoning County Experimental Farm Classroom on the first two days. The final day will take place at Redeemer Lutheran church, located at 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown. There will be a picnic on the last day. There will be crafts, games, gifts, music and fun. The event is free and open to all children in the community between the ages of 3 and 12. Paint a cake for Father’s Day

Sip or chug a drink from Dairy Queen and paint a DQ cake for Father’s Day. They will provide you with a blank DQ cake, which will serve as your very own “canvas.” Do it all by yourself, or qualified cake decorators will be on hand to show you how to border, or how to use an airbrush. Add sprinkles, colorful whipped cream icing, gel and ribbons. This is an open house event. It should only take about 15 minutes to decorate your DQ cake. Remember, it is a ice cream cake, so it will begin to melt if you take too long. They will be happy to keep your cake in the freezer for you so that you can eat and relax. The cost to participate is the cost of the DQ cake and your drink. You do not need an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome. However, they can not guarantee you the size you may want or the attention from the decorator that you may need if you do not call ahead and have them hold your cake and let them know you are coming. The Canfield store, located at 101 S. Broad Street in Canfield, will host the event outside from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on June 16 and can be contacted at 330-533-6647. Tales of King Arthur

Be swept away by tales of gallant knights in shining armor, elegant ladies in medieval castles and the court of Camelot as high school actors perform Arthurian Legends on June 18 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library. This event is for school-age children, tweens and teens.

The Hopewell Theatre closes season with classic comedy “Plaza Suite”

Three stories ranging from heart-breaking to hilarious, yet all set in the same Suite 719 of New York City’s Plaza Hotel is an accurate description of Neil Simon’s classic comedy “Plaza Suite.” Performances are at the Hopewell Theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m., on May 25 and 26, June 1 and 2, and one Sunday matinee on June 3 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $13 for general admission and $10 for students/seniors. Rummage sale to take place during festival

There will be a rummage sale with numerous offerings during the annual festival at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4490 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown, on May 30 until June 3. The rummage sale hours will take place from 6-9 p.m. nightly. Special prices will be offered on June 3.

Rock out with the Green Team

Rock out with Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team, as they present a Sesame Street book titled “From Trash to Treasure” by Liza Alexander on June 25 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library. After reading the story, you will be able create musical instruments from recovered material and join in the band to play the ever popular Recycle Rap! This event is for children of all ages.

Lyrically challenged

Fill in the blanks to these commonly misheard song lyrics and then match the song to the correct decade during regular hours throughout June at the Austintown library. The person with the most correct answers wins a prize. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

A dozen makes a difference

The Austintown library wants its materials being used by the community. Help them empty their shelves by borrowing books, movies and other items at the Austintown library this summer. Each time you check out a dozen or more items, you will help them create a masterpiece by adding a square to our “Starry Night” mosaic poster. This event is for all ages.

Missing velociraptor eggs

In anticipation of the new Jurassic World movie, someone has stolen the Austintown library’s velociraptor eggs from their nest. Scour the library during regular hours thoughout June to find out which Jurassic Park characters have taken them. One selected winner will receive a Jurassic Park T-shirt. This event is for all ages.

Shake, shimmy and make

Make a musical instrument and more during regular hours at the Austintown library throughout June. This event is for rock and rollers of all ages.

Swedish weaving

Join volunteers from the Embroiderer’s Guild of Youngstown and learn to create a Swedish weaving sampler on June 18 at 3 p.m. at the Austintown library. People always say the book is better than the movie. This book club will get together to read and discuss books that are soon to be released in the theaters. Talk about books, movies, have a small snack and meet new people. The next event will take place on June 14 at 7 p.m. at the Austintown library. They will be discussing “The Darkest Minds” by Alexandra Braken. This event is for adults.

Stranger Reads book club

Do you want to talk about a book, but want to avoid the obligation of reading one picked out for you? Go to the Stranger Reads book club and tell them what you enjoyed reading this month. You might even hear about a new book you want to read. Upcoming meetings are June 11, July 9 and Aug. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library. This event is for adults.

Coupon swap at the library

Do you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have? Drop in during library hours during June, July and August at the Austintown library to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.

Family music concert with Jim Gill

Sing and clap along with award-winning musician and author Jim Gill and his banjo at the Austintown library on June 15 at 2 p.m. As a child development specialist, Gill will teach you the importance of play in a child’s early years. His books and CDs will also be available for sale.

Madcap Puppets present “Rumpelstiltskin”

Rose must spin straw into gold to save her father at this program on June 13 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Austintown library. With the help of a strange little creature, she does the impossible, but she could lose everything if she can’t guess his name. This musical adaptation is sure to delight audiences of all ages.

Pre-kindergarten story time

This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten on June 6 at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library.

Bonding with babies and books

This event, offered every Tuesday at 10 a.m. in June at the Austintown library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Read to Reese

To boost your reading confidence, come and read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners, at the Austintown library on June 8 at 11 a.m. Bring your own book, or the librarians will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Strategy board games at the library

Go to the Austintown library on June 2 at 3 p.m. to play games like “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what’s there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults and teens.

Paint a planter

Paint a ceramic planter on June 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. Be as creative as you want to be. Registration is required. This event is for adults.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross - Austintown to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital at the Austintown library on June 5 from 1-6 p.m. and June 9 from 10:30 until 3 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Austintown bands to march May 28

On May 28 at 10 a.m., the AMS eighth-grade band members will join the high school marching band under the direction of Wesley O’Connor and McClaine for the Austintown Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service. The parade begins on Idaho Road at Marc’s and ends at the high school Veteran’s Memorial in front of Fitch High School. Austintown Food Service department announces summer food program

The Austintown Local School District will again sponsor the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Free meals will be made available to all children ages 1-18 at the Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road - Lynn Kirk Loop. Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 4 until Aug. 17. Concert series begins June 5

The 2018 Summer Concerts in the Park Series at Austintown Township Park, located at 6000 Kirk Road, will soon begin. All concerts will take place on Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. (weather permitting). Local libraries close for holidays in May

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 27 and on Memorial Day, May 28.

Immaculate Mile race to be May 31

The Immaculate Mile at the Festival Race will take place on May 31 ar 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4490 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. Runners of all experience levels are welcome. The entry fee is $10 with all proceeds benefitting the church. There will be top overall finisher and age group awards. There will be a free children’s dash event for children who are ages 10-years-old and younger. The children’s dash begins at 7 p.m. with the mile race beginning at its conclusion. Night Out raises funds with sale

Austintown’s National Night Out Celebration will be hosting its second annual Trash and Treasure Sale fundraiser on May 27 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Austintown Township Park. The event is taking place rain or shine, and is open to all. Spaces are still available and run $10 per (parking) space. Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” It will run from May 1 until July 31. Sign up and receive a coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers ticket voucher. Children who complete the program have the chance to have breakfast with Marc Brown, author/illustrator of the “Arthur” series. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 22 will be invited to a breakfast event on July 27, sponsored by Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC. Teens and adults can also participate in Summer Discovery by reading books to earn prizes and earn a chance to win a gift card.

Saxon Club hosts annual flea market

The Saxon Club will start its annual flea market event on May 1 with a flea market taking place every Tuesday through October. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and takes place in the Saxon Club parking lot, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Austintown. Vendors can set up before 8 a.m. if they would like. Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank

On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $35. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Austintown Local School District announces open enrollment for 2018-2019

The Austintown Local School district will again have statewide open enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in grades Kindergarten through eighth-grade based on grade level availability. Applications are now available on the Austintown School’s website at www.austintownschools.org. In order to be accepted for open enrollment, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Any students living in the state of Ohio and entering grades kindergarten through eighth are eligible. One application must be completed for each student. No new students will be accepted in grades 9-12. Only existing open enrollment students and those in special programs will be accepted into the high school. Open enrollment will close on Aug. 3 for the 2018-2019 school year. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
