Struthers boy’s basketball coach James Franceschelli is resigning after four seasons in charge. The move was first reported by The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, WFMJ.

Struthers was 50-46 in his tenure. This past season, the Wildcats were 15-11 with their season ending with a loss to Lakeview in the district final. Franceschelli told WFMJ he was stepping down for personal reasons.

Fitch’s Billy Price signs with Bengals

CINCINNATI

The Cincinnati Bengals have signed first-round pick Billy Price on Monday, the team announced. The center from Austintown Fitch and Ohio State inked a four-year deal with an option for a fifth year. Financial terms were not disclosed.

At Ohio State, Price was a two-time All-American who is the school’s leader in total and consecutive starts with 55. He started as a freshman for the Buckeyes’ 2014 national championship team.

Lou Holtz settles defamation lawsuit

Attorneys for Lou Holtz say the former Notre Dame coach and the news website The Daily Beast have settled a defamation lawsuit filed by the ex-ESPN analyst and college football Hall of Famer.

Orlando, Florida, law firm Morgan & Morgan announced in a news release Monday the two sides came to an amicable resolution. The firm says terms of the settlement were confidential, but The Daily Beast apologized for and corrected the headline that ran July 19, 2016, with a story on the East Liverpool native’s remarks at a luncheon the Republican National Coalition for Life held during the Republican National Convention.

The headline read: “Lou Holtz at RNC says Immigrants are Deadbeats Invading the U.S.” In its apology, The Daily Beast admitted that Holtz did not say immigrants are deadbeats. The Daily Beast said it stands by the rest of its story.

LSU lands former Ohio State QB

BATON ROUGE, LA.

Former Ohio State quarterback Joe Burrow is transferring to LSU, where he will be eligible to play immediately and compete for the Tigers’ starting job.

LSU announced Monday the addition of Burrow, who recently graduated from Ohio State and has two years of eligibility remaining. Burrow spent three seasons at Ohio State but was never able to work his way to the top of a crowded depth chart that included J.T. Barrett over the last four seasons.

Goodell details NFL’s stance on gambling

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says Congress should enact uniform standards for any states that plan to legislate sports betting.

Goodell detailed the league’s position in a statement Monday that reiterated the NFL’s stance that legalized sports gambling in the United States should be governed by federal law rather than state law. The Supreme Court ruled last week to strike down a 1992 law that barred most state-authorized sports gambling.

In suggesting four core principles that should be maintained for any form of legalized sports betting, Goodell stressed that leagues can “protect our content and intellectual property from those who attempt to steal or misuse it.” He also said guidelines must provide substantial consumer protections.

Zlatan slaps player, flops during defeat

MONTREAL

Playing a man down after Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic got a red card in the 42nd minute, the Los Angeles Galaxy got past the Montreal Impact 1-0 Monday on a goal by Ola Kamara.

Ibrahimovic was sent off after slapping Michael Petrasso, who had stepped on Ibrahimovic’s foot while marking him well away from the ball. After consulting video, referee Ismail Elfath showed Ibrahimovic the red card and Petrasso the yellow.

Both went down after the slap, and Ibrahimovic was limping as a trainer helped him off the field.
