South Range records set at district meet

SALEM

South Range runner Ian Pierson set a school record in the 1660 during Saturday’s district meet at Reilly Stadium. Pierson’s time was 4:22.84.

South Range’s 4x200 relay team set a school record in qualifying for the Division II regional meet. Abby George, Bethany Crouch, Sammy Patrone, and Delaney Less ran the race in 1:50.6.

Billy Cannon, 80; won Heisman Trophy

BATON ROUGE, La.

Billy Cannon, the gifted running back who won the Heisman Trophy for LSU in 1959 with a memorable Halloween night punt return touchdown against Mississippi, died Sunday. He was 80.

LSU said Cannon, the school’s only Heisman winner, died at his home in St. Francisville. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Cannon led the Tigers to a national championship in 1958 and won the Heisman the following year, highlighted by his tackle-breaking 89-yard punt return that beat Ole Miss 7-3 and is still regularly shown on the video board at Tiger Stadium during LSU games.

Cannon went on to a successful pro career with the Houston Oilers, Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs, and became a dentist after retiring from football. But life after football was far from smooth. He served 21/2 years in federal prison for counterfeiting in the mid-1980s after a series of bad investments and debts left him broke.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008, though it came on the second time he was voted in. The first time was in 1983, but the honor was rescinded because of his legal issues. After leaving prison, it took Cannon a while to put his life back together.

Sky defeats Liberty

CHICAGO

Allie Quigley scored 15 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter to help the Chicago Sky beat the New York Liberty 80-76 on Sunday night.

It was the Sky’s first game at the new Wintrust Arena.

Quigley made 2-of-3 free throws and Diamond DeShields hit a 3-pointer to spark an 8-2 spurt that made it 68-64 with six minutes to play and Chicago (2-0) led the rest of the way. New York (0-1) trimmed its deficit to one point on four occasions, the last of which came when Tina Charles’ jumper made it 74-73 with three minutes to go. Quigley answered with two free throws before Cheyenne Parker’s offensive rebound and putbuck pushed the lead back to five.

Jamierra Faulkner had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Gabby Williams, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 WNBA draft, scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting for Chicago.

Charles led New York with 19 points. Rookie Kia Nurse added 17 and Amanda Zahui B scored 15.

Red Bulls triumph against Atlanta United

ATLANTA

Bradley-Wright Phillips scored two second-half goals in the New York Red Bulls’ 3-1 victory over Atlanta United on Sunday night.

New York (7-3-0) has won four in a row, outscoring its opponents 12-4 during that span.

Wright-Phillips headed home Michael Murillo’s cross to the center of the box to give the Red Bulls a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute. About four minutes later, Wright-Phillips capped the scoring with a header, off an entry from Alejandro Romero Gamarra, that banged in off the crossbar.

Atlanta’s Ezequiel Barco put away a deflected through pass from Miguel Almiron to open the scoring in the 26th minute.

Daniel Royer converted from the spot in the 42nd to make it 1-1 after Wright-Phillips drew a foul in the area conceded by Miles Robinson.

Atlanta (8-3-1) lost for just the second time since opening day.

Wright-Phillips has eight goals this season, tied with Almiron and Columbus’ Gyasi Zardes for the most in MLS.

Atlanta’s Greg Garza was shown a straight red card in the 71st minute for a serious foul.
