Liberty police continue investigation of weekend bomb threat

LIBERTY — Township police continue their investigation into who phoned in a bomb threat over the weekend that resulted in evacuation of the Walmart store on Belmont Avenue.

The threat was phoned in about 5:48 p.m. Saturday.

According to a police report, a man called the bakery line, stated he was a Youngstown police officer and said he got a call about a bomb threat. He stated the person wanted $50,000 and the bomb was in the grocery section, the report said.

The man did not identify himself or his rank, or specify how this money was to be paid, and there was no caller ID, the report said.

Customers were evacuated, and the store's Goldie Road entrance was blocked. Mercy Health sent a bomb dog to check the facility, the report said.

The dog conducted a thorough sweep of the store but found nothing. At that point the store reopened, the report said.

Youngstown police had no information about someone from its department making such a call, the report said.
