COITSVILLE

Struthers High School is announcing the first winner of the Otis R. Heldman Sr. and Jr. Scholar-Athlete Award and Scholarship, Aleya Mims. Mims is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cedric Mims of Struthers and will graduate with a 3.9 grade-point average. She plans to begin pre-med studies in September at the University of Mount Union in pursuit of her goal to become an orthopedic surgeon.

The late Andrew Thomas Grischow of Coitsville has been named the first Struthers High School alumnus to be honored at the “Bub” Heldman Memorial Golf Outing that will take place Saturday at Bedford Trails Golf Course, 713 Bedford Road, Coitsville. He is the 2018 Memorial Struthers High School Scholar-Athlete honoree. The honor is being posthumously awarded to Grischow in recognition that he was a student who exemplified the criteria of the new Otis R. Heldman Sr. and Jr., Scholar-Athlete Award and Scholarship.

Dr. Elizabeth Heldman, trustee of the Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Fund, says, “Although the award is new and unique, it is a recognition of the old-fashioned, small-town, parental values and sacrifices that produce exceptional students. We hope that by remembering a past SHS Scholar-Athlete, Tom Grischow, and by introducing Aleya Mims, a new Scholar-Athlete, we can help perpetuate those values.”

Mims received the Scholar-Athlete Award and $8,000 Scholarship recently at a ceremony at the Struthers Middle School Auditorium.

The golf outing will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. with lunch, dinner, golf prizes, raffles and an opportunity to meet Mims.
