Flames shut down Penguins, 12-0

CHICAGO

UIC scored eight runs over the first four innings on its way to a 12-0 win over YSU Friday night at Curtis Granderson Stadium.

The Flames also were dominant on the mound for the second straight night to take a 2-0 lead in the three-game series. UIC held the Penguins (17-35, 10-18 Horizon League) to just two hits in a 6-2 win in on Thursday.

UIC starter Charlie Cerny fanned six batters through his first four innings and went on to post a career-high nine strikeouts while allowing just four hits over six scoreless innings.

Blaze Glenn paced YSU with a pair of doubles.

The Penguins are locked in as the No. 5 seed in the Horizon League Tournament, which will take place Wednesday-Saturday next week at Wright State. YSU will face the loser of today’s game between Milwaukee and Oakland in the first round.

YSU and UIC (27-16, 14-9) will meet at 1:05 p.m. in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Four Penguins reach NCAA East prelims

YOUNGSTOWN

Four Youngstown State men’s track and field athletes — Chad Zallow, Collin Harden, Tyler Donati and Arnaldo Morales — have advanced to compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Round which will be held Thursday-Saturday in Tampa, Fla. The event is being hosted by South Florida and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission at the USF Track and Field Stadium.

Zallow is the top qualifier for YSU ranking 13th in the 110 hurdles. Harden is 17th in the 400 hurdles, Morales is 32nd in the high jump, while Donati is 33rd in the javelin. Zallow is a three-time NCAA prelims qualifier while Harden and Donati were all part of the prelims last year. Morales has been to the meet on three previous occasions.

Zallow, who was a second-team Outdoor All-American last year in the 110 hurdles, has a top time of 13.69 seconds which he posted on May 5 in the prelims of the Horizon League Track and Field Championships. Morales’ top mark in the high jump is 2.14 meters which he had on April 14 at the Westminster Invitational. Harden’s top performance in the 400 hurdles came at the BYU Last Chance Meet when he ran a time of 51.30 on May 11. Donati’s best throw in the javelin was 66.22 meters which he had on May 6 to win the Horizon League Championship.

Last year, Zallow won both of his heats in the 110 hurdles to advance to the NCAA Championships. Harden moved on to the quarterfinals in the 400 hurdles and finished 17th at the event. Donati placed 44th in his first appearance. Morales was 25th in the high jump in 2016, 28th in 2015 and 45th in 2014.

The 110 hurdles are set for at 4:30 p.m. Friday and 7:05 p.m. Saturday. The 400 hurdles is 4:30 p.m. on Thursday and 7 p.m. on Friday. The high jump is Saturday at 4:15 p.m. The javelin is at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Corbett, Jones qualify for NCAA prelims

YOUNGSTOWN

YSU senior thrower Jaynee Corbett and junior jumper Abby Jones have qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round which will be held Thursday-Saturday in Tampa, Fla.

Corbett, who qualified 20th in the shot put, is making her third appearance at the NCAA prelims, while Jones, who qualified 28th in the high jump, is making her first appearance.

Corbett’s season-best effort came this past week at the BYU Last Chance Meet when she uncroked a school-record throw of 15.95m. Jones’ best mark of 1.76m in the high jump, which is also a school record, came on May 5 at the Horizon League Track and Field Championships.

At last year’s Preliminary Round competition, Corbett was 26th and 2016 she placed 28th.

Both athletes will be in action on Thursday. Jones will compete at 5 p.m. while Corbett is set to throw at 8 p.m.
