Canfield’s Cianciola, doubles duo Nalluri, Martin reach state
AKRON
Canfield senior singles player Tim Cianciola clinched his third state tournament berth and the Cardinals’ doubles team of Sirin Nalluri and Ben Martin also qualified for state Thursday during the first day of the Division I district tournament at Springdale Racquet and Fitness Club.
Cianciola made quick work of Lakewood freshman Sam Dubusker in a first-round match, winning 6-0, 6-0. He then defeated Solon senior Luke Qin 6-1, 6-1.
Cianciola will face Brunswick senior Adam Slomski in a district semifinal on Saturday, when seeding for next week’s state tournament will be determined.
Nalluri, a sophomore, and Martin, a freshman, also won their matches in straight sets Thursday. They opened with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Solon senior Justin Prindle and junior Andy Liebowitz. Nalluri and Martin then beat Revere juniors Raj and Ram Kumar 6-1, 6-3.
The Canfield duo will face Mayfield junior Kevin Ng and freshman Yukun Wang in a semifinal on Saturday.
The state tournament is May 25-26 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. Before that, the Canfield tennis team will host the winner of a match between Solon and Massillon Jackson on Tuesday in a team tennis regional final for the right to play in the state team tennis final four.
“It’s going to be an exciting week for Canfield tennis,” Cardinals coach Pat Pavlansky said.
Warren Harding junior Alex Payiavlas also competed Thursday. He lost his first-round match to Cleveland St. Ignatius junior Jack McNally, 6-4, 6-2.

Jefferson piled up 12 runs in the third inning, and never looked back. Sheridon Wilber drove in four runs for the Falcons. Colleen Hurst had four hits and an RBI. For Lakeview, Beady Titus had a double, while McKenna Cannon, Tori Wells, and Annie Pavlansky drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.

Lauren Frigyes gave up just two hits and struck out 11 for Minerva. Alyssa Laubacher had three hits and a steal for Salem.
