Classmates to meet to discuss reunion plans
Classmates from the Poland Seminary High School class of 1969 are invited to a meeting to decide on the date and location for their 50th reunion to take place in 2019. The meeting will take place on May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (State Route 224 and Struthers Road intersection) in Poland Township. If you can’t attend the meeting but would like to share ideas for the reunion, send an email to Dave Watts at misty50@zoominternet.net. Another part of the planning includes locating all classmates by updating mailing addresses, phone numbers, email addresses for all classmates and those updates may also be sent to Watts in an email.
Poland branch becomes first in state to offer special loan
The Poland branch of AmeriFirst Home Mortgage recently announced that it is the first in Ohio to offer a USDA Rural Development New Construction loan. Ladies in Little Black Dresses for Literacy
Reserve your place now for a Literary Society fundraising event, Ladies in Little Black Dresses for Literacy, at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland, at 6 p.m. on June 7. Tickets are $40 each and include heavy appetizers and one glass of wine. There will be a cash bar. This event benefits Library Foundation funds: the Carol A. Bacon Literary Society Fund and the Martha Muransky Children’s Literacy Fund. These boutiques will sell accessories and a portion of the proceeds from participating boutiques will benefit these funds: Suzanne’s, Ivory & Birch, Matilda Jane Clothing. Along with the, sponsors of the event are The Muransky Companies, in memory of Martha Muransky, and Home Savings. Attendees are asked to bring a copy of a book by their favorite author to swap with other attendees and can also donate once-read or brand new children’s books. Playtime at your library
Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Poland library on June 5 at 10 a.m. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, offered every Wednesday at 10 a.m. in June at the Poland library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Poland library on June 14 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Basic conversational French
Join Ron Saffell for this series of programs and learn French using games and fun activities on June 4 at 3:30 p.m. at the Poland library. This event is for teens and tweens, but adults are welcome. Reservations are needed.
Business start-up workshop
Are you thinking about starting a business in the near future or further down the road? This program at the Poland library on June 4 at 6:30 p.m. will address key topics for beginning a business and will discuss the library’s sources and services for business start-up and beyond. Blood drive
There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital at the Poland library on June 8 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and June 21 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Decorate an ornament during regular hours throughout May for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree. This event is for children of all ages.
Poland Lions host Treasures of the Trunk Sale
The Poland Lions are hosting their annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 9. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Poland High School’s Stadium Parking Lot at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sake items are welcome. There are 50 spaces available. The cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 on June 1. Meet Renate Frydman on May 23
Join the Poland library on May 23 at noon for a special author event featuring Renate Frydman, whose book, “Anschel’s Story: Determined to Survive,” tells the story of her late-husband’s survival in Nazi-occupied Poland. The author will sign and sell books at this event. Reservations are required; contact the Library’s Development Office at 330-740-6086. The event is sponsored by the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Literary Society and the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation.
Bonding with babies, books and signs
Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library on May 30 at 10 a.m. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.
Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie at 6 p.m. on May 22 at the Poland library. Roxie is a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for children in grades 1-4.
No need to knead
Join the Poland library on May 29 at 6 p.m. as they teach you how to make homemade bread without kneading. Sample a finished loaf, and take home a batch of dough to bake at home. Ingredients will be provided, but they ask attendees to bring their own mixing bowl and mixing spoon. (Food waiver must be signed) Space is limited; registration recommended. This event is for adults and teens.
Decades rewind party
The Poland library is hosting a special summer program for teens on July 12 at 6 p.m. Celebrate the hits of the past at this music decades party. Feel free to come in costume and dance the night away.

Local libraries close for holidays in May
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 27 and on Memorial Day, May 28.
Yoga class
The Friends of PLYMC are sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday during May from 5-6 p.m. at the Poland branch library in the meeting room. Pay as you attend at $10 per session.

Register for Summer Discovery beginning on May 1
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” It will run from May 1 until July 31. Sign up and receive a coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers ticket voucher. Children who complete the program have the chance to have breakfast with Marc Brown, author/illustrator of the “Arthur” series. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 22 will be invited to a breakfast event on July 27, sponsored by Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC. Teens and adults can also participate in Summer Discovery by reading books to earn prizes and earn a chance to win a gift card.
Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank
On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $35. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
