Canfield resident pays it forward with help from Austintown restaurant
Joanne Bruno George, will be the guest bartender at The Manor Restaurant on May 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. She will donate her time to raise funds for the Eastern Regional Kidney Foundation. The Manor has guaranteed to donate at least 5 percent of the sales she generates to the local charity. George credits the ERKF for helping her survive a life-threatening illness. Participants can have 5 percent of their total purchase donated by printing a flyer to present to their server at the time of payment by visiting the restaurant’s Facebook page. George is the wife of The Manor’s chef, Ron George. She will be the second guest bartender the restaurant has featured. The first guest bartender, Danielle Russo, raised more than $300 for the Warren Relay for Life. The Manor ultimately ended up donating 5 percent of the entire daily sales rather than just the sales Russo generated. The ERKF kidney mascot will be at the restaurant while George is guest bartender. The Manor is looking to have a guest bartender each month, and welcomes anyone interested in participating to place their name, phone number and charity name in a bowl at the bar to be selected. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for May
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on May 21 from 6-8 p.m. in the Small Meeting Room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, located at 43 W. Landscape pruning clinic
Learn how to care for and mold your landscape into a healthy and beautiful space at this pruning clinic covering such topics as disease reduction, regeneration, shape and proper landscape maintenance. MCCTC students open greenhouse for spring plant sale
The Spring Plant Sale, sponsored by the Floral Design and Landscaping program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, has started selling their plants. Students in the program have prepared items including assorted annuals, hanging baskets and patio planters. Flats of flowers will also be available. The Horticulture Greenhouse will be open to the public from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout the month of May until all items are sold. Register for Summer Discovery beginning on May 1
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” It will run from May 1 until July 31. Sign up and receive a coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers ticket voucher. Children who complete the program have the chance to have breakfast with Marc Brown, author/illustrator of the “Arthur” series. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 22 will be invited to a breakfast event on July 27, sponsored by Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC. Teens and adults can also participate in Summer Discovery by reading books to earn prizes and earn a chance to win a gift card.
Nominations open for awards ceremony
In celebration of National Emergency Medical Service (EMS) week, Steward Health Care System will host its First National “EMS Stewards of the Community” Awards Ceremony on May 24 at The Squaw Creek Country Club. Steward, which operates four local hospitals, including Sharon Regional Medical Center, Trumbull Regional Medical Center, Northside Regional Medical Center and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, will recognize several Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers for going “above and beyond” in their interactions with patients at each of Steward’s community hospitals. To nominate an EMS provider in your community for an “EMS Stewards of the Community” award, visit http://info.steward.org/emsaward2018-OHPA.html. Nominations must be received by April 27. The “EMS Stewards of the Community” awards show appreciation for emergency medical responders and dispatchers, emergency medical technicians, advanced emergency medical technicians and paramedics who not only carry out the noble work of caring for others, but do so with a high degree of expertise, professionalism and compassion. An internal committee of physicians, nurses and EMS Managers will review nominations and select recipients for each of the Steward hospitals.
Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank
On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $35. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center
The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: June 21 at 6:30 p.m. - “Be Confident,” July 19 at 6:30 p.m. - “Risk New Things,” Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m. - “Stick with It,” Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get on Your Knees” and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
