Canfield resident pays it forward with help from Austintown restaurant

Joanne Bruno George, will be the guest bartender at The Manor Restaurant on May 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. She will donate her time to raise funds for the Eastern Regional Kidney Foundation. The Manor has guaranteed to donate at least 5 percent of the sales she generates to the local charity. George credits the ERKF for helping her survive a life-threatening illness. Participants can have 5 percent of their total purchase donated by printing a flyer to present to their server at the time of payment by visiting the restaurant’s Facebook page. George is the wife of The Manor’s chef, Ron George. She will be the second guest bartender the restaurant has featured. The first guest bartender, Danielle Russo, raised more than $300 for the Warren Relay for Life. The Manor ultimately ended up donating 5 percent of the entire daily sales rather than just the sales Russo generated. The ERKF kidney mascot will be at the restaurant while George is guest bartender. The Manor is looking to have a guest bartender each month, and welcomes anyone interested in participating to place their name, phone number and charity name in a bowl at the bar to be selected. Family music concert with Jim Gill

Sing and clap along with award-winning musician and author Jim Gill and his banjo at the Austintown library on June 15 at 2 p.m. As a child development specialist, Gill will teach you the importance of play in a child’s early years. His books and CDs will also be available for sale.

Madcap Puppets present “Rumpelstiltskin”

Rose must spin straw into gold to save her father at this program on June 13 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Austintown library. With the help of a strange little creature, she does the impossible, but she could lose everything if she can’t guess his name. This musical adaptation is sure to delight audiences of all ages.

Pre-kindergarten story time

This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten on June 6 at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library.

Bonding with babies and books

This event, offered every Tuesday at 10 a.m. in June at the Austintown library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Austintown library on June 6 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in June at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Hooray for doughnut day

Come celebrate National Doughnut Day with at the Austintown library on June 1 at 10 a.m. Enjoy stories, activities and decorating your own doughnut. Light refreshments will be offered. This event is for children of all ages.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Austintown library on June 6 at 6 p.m. and June 22 at 3 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Read to Reese

To boost your reading confidence, come and read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners, at the Austintown library on June 8 at 11 a.m. Bring your own book, or the librarians will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Registration is required. Space is limited. Register online or by calling 330-744-8636 and asking for the Austintown library. This event is for school age children.

Strategy board games at the library

Go to the Austintown library on June 2 at 3 p.m. to play games like “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what’s there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults and teens.

Paint a planter

Paint a ceramic planter on June 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. Be as creative as you want to be. Registration is required. This event is for adults.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross - Austintown to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital at the Austintown library on June 5 from 1-6 p.m. and June 9 from 10:30 until 3 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Auditions announced for “A Wrinkle in Time”

The Hopewell Theatre recently announced auditions for their annual summer family show, “A Wrinkle in Time,” based on the book by Madeline L’Engle and adapted to the stage by Morgan Gould. Auditions will be at 6:30 p.m. on May 21 and 22 at the theater, located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Cast requirements are males and females from age 6 through adult, and everyone from neophyte to veteran is encouraged to audition. All roles are open and available. Those auditioning will be asked to read from the script. Roles range from leads to single line roles. This is a great opportunity for first timers, but all are encouraged to audition. Austintown Food Service department announces summer food program

The Austintown Local School District will again sponsor the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Free meals will be made available to all children ages 1-18 at the Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road - Lynn Kirk Loop. Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 4 until Aug. 17. Austintown bands announce spring concert series

The Austintown School’s instrumental music department recently announced the spring concert schedule for the final concerts of the 2017-2018 school year and invites the public to attend these concerts. The concert series will conclude with the May 21 and 22 presentations by the Austintown Intermediate and Austintown Middle School bands. Jeremy McClaine and Jackie Mortimer will conduct the 120 member AIS fifth-grade band on May 21, along with the AMS sixth-grade band. The theme of the concert will be “Places around the World.” The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Fitch High School auditorium. On the following night, May 22, McClaine will conduct the AMS seventh-grade band at 7 p.m., followed by the eighth-grade band. The theme of that concert will be “Adventures of the Land, Sky and Sea.” On May 28 at 10 a.m., the AMS eighth-grade band members will join the high school marching band under the direction of Wesley O’Connor and McClaine for the Austintown Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service. The parade begins on Idaho Road at Marc’s and ends at the high school Veteran’s Memorial in front of Fitch High School. Tickets for all concerts are available at the auditorium the night of each concert and are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens, veterans and students. Proceeds from the concerts are used to support the more than 460 members of the Austintown instrumental music programs and fund the annual senior scholarships. Guess the picture book

Can you guess the picture book from the cut-up cover during library hours throughout May at the Austintown library? One winner will be chosen at random from correct entries. This event is for children of all ages.

Jabba the Hutt has sent a bounty hunter to find Han Solo and Chewbacca at the Austintown library. Find them during regular hours throughout May before the bounty hunter to collect the reward for yourself. This event is for teens in grades 6 and up.

Basket raffle event to benefit two dog rescues

Legacy Dog Rescue and Never Muzzled are hosting a basket raffle event on May 19 at The Federal, located at 110 W Federal St. in Youngstown. The event will be from 12-6 p.m. with baskets drawn at 6 p.m. One hundred baskets and/or gift cards will be raffled off. The winners drawn at 6 p.m. and need not be present. Have lunch or dinner and more with great friends working together to help the forgotten dogs of the Valley. Fifteen percent of all food sales will be donated back. Concert series begins June 5

The 2018 Summer Concerts in the Park Series at Austintown Township Park, located at 6000 Kirk Road, will soon begin. All concerts will take place on Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. (weather permitting). Movie night

Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie on May 29 at 6 p.m. at the Austintown library. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Chapter Chat book club

If you love books, attend to the Chapter Chat book club at the Austintown library where they will be reading and discussing a book together every month. Each month will be a new genre. The next meeting is May 23 at 6:30 p.m. This month, they will be reading “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by David Sedaris. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults.

True Crime Series, part 5: reader’s choice

This five-part series will cover a different unsolved true crime each month. You choose any book, documentary (etc.) based on the current month’s topic and join us for discussion. This month’s meeting will take place on May 21 at 6 p.m. at the Austintown library and will be reader’s choice. This event is for adults.

Do you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have? Drop in during Austintown library hours throughout May to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.

Help the Austintown library empty their shelves by borrowing our books, movies and other items during regular hours throughout May. Borrow a dozen or more items at one time on your library card at the Austintown library. Show your check-out receipt to a librarian to receive a small giveaway.

Friends of the Austintown Library presentation and meeting

Attorney Kathi McNabb Welsh, Mahoning County’s Chief Deputy Clerk of Courts, will discuss the steps needed to become a U.S. citizen at the Austintown library on May 21 at 10 a.m. The presentation will be followed by the meeting. Local libraries close for holidays in May

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on May 27 and on Memorial Day, May 28.

Immaculate Mile race to be May 31

The Immaculate Mile at the Festival Race will take place on May 31 ar 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4490 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. Runners of all experience levels are welcome. The entry fee is $10 with all proceeds benefitting the church. There will be top overall finisher and age group awards. There will be a free children’s dash event for children who are ages 10-years-old and younger. The children’s dash begins at 7 p.m. with the mile race beginning at its conclusion. Night Out raises funds with sale

Austintown’s National Night Out Celebration will be hosting its second annual Trash and Treasure Sale fundraiser on May 27 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Austintown Township Park. Applications for this year’s $1000 Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest are available by by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. The deadline for submission is June 15.

Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online on or after May 1 to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” It will run from May 1 until July 31. Sign up and receive a coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers ticket voucher. Children who complete the program have the chance to have breakfast with Marc Brown, author/illustrator of the “Arthur” series. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 22 will be invited to a breakfast event on July 27, sponsored by Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC. Teens and adults can also participate in Summer Discovery by reading books to earn prizes and earn a chance to win a gift card.

Saxon Club hosts annual flea market

The Saxon Club will start its annual flea market event on May 1 with a flea market taking place every Tuesday through October. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and takes place in the Saxon Club parking lot, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Austintown. Vendors can set up before 8 a.m. if they would like. Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank

On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is $35. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Austintown Local School District announces open enrollment for 2018-2019

The Austintown Local School district will again have statewide open enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in grades Kindergarten through eighth-grade based on grade level availability. Applications are now available on the Austintown School’s website at www.austintownschools.org. In order to be accepted for open enrollment, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Any students living in the state of Ohio and entering grades kindergarten through eighth are eligible. One application must be completed for each student. No new students will be accepted in grades 9-12. Only existing open enrollment students and those in special programs will be accepted into the high school. Open enrollment will close on Aug. 3 for the 2018-2019 school year. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
