Auxiliary installs slate, will host Bling Boutique

The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary Youngstown Citadel will host its Bling Boutique Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Preakness Neighborhood Garage Sale off of New Road in Austintown. Those interested can find the Bling Boutique at 5280 Nashua Drive for costume jewelry, scarves and purses.

Proceeds will support Salvation Army projects, including the after school program, the holiday toy drive and the soup kitchen.

Local man to walk for Shriners Hospitals

ERIE

Howard Merritt of Canfield will participate in the annual Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community on behalf of the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Erie. The 5K walk is an annual fundraising event which takes place at Presque Isle State Park and includes more than 18 local charitable entities. Merritt is also a Board of Governors member of the SHC-Erie and has raised more than $12,500 over the three years of this event.

One-hundred percent of the proceeds raised go directly to the hospital in Erie in support of its specialized pediatric orthopedic care. Individuals, businesses or organizations that are interested in pledging support can mail a donation for Shriners Hospitals for Children-Erie (with “Highmark Walk” in the memo line) to the Youngstown Shrine Club, P.O. Students to explore careers Tuesday

BROOKFIELD

Brookfield Middle School eighth-grade students will hear guest speakers from various careers from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the BMS gymnasium as part of Career Day. The speakers will share insight into career paths, as well as several demonstrations including ice sculpting.

The Student Career Fair will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium, and students will dress in the profession they have chosen and share research they have done on the career with parents and community members.

Library to host birding slide show

BRISTOLVILLE

Bristol Public Library, 1855 OH-88, will host “Discovering Paradise,” a presentation by Larry Richardson. There will be a slide show of Richardson’s expedition to Panama. Registration is required due to limited space and may be done by calling the circulation desk at 330-889-3651.

Shepherd of the Valley to dispose of flags

During May, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired. Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Veterans Hall of Fame accepting applications

The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame is accepting nominations of anyone who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces and contributed to their communities, state and nation through exceptional acts of volunteerism, advocacy, professional distinction, public service and philanthropy.

The Hall of Fame also includes captains of industry, professional educators, political champions and civic supporters. Honorees include Neil Armstrong, astronaut; Paul Newman, actor; R. David Thomas, business entrepreneur and philanthropist; and Dr. Henry Heimlich, surgeon and inventor. To be considered the veteran must be a past or current Ohio resident; have received and honorable discharge; and be of good moral character.
