Dead dogs lead to jail time for Youngstown man

YOUNGSTOWN

A city man found responsible for the death of two dogs will spend six months in jail and a judge forbade him from ever owning an animal again.

John Burroughs, 67, of Hilltop Avenue, pleaded guilty to two counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals.

When Animal Charity Humane Society employees visited his property, they reported that they found two dead dogs, two that appeared underfed and two puppies that were dehydrated and covered in feces.

While Burroughs’ attorney said he no longer lived at the house with the dogs, Judge Lou A. D’Apolito said he still bore repsonsibility for their well-being.

The six-month jail sentence was a condition of three years’ probation. Judge D’Apolito also told Burroughs that if he violates the court order and purchases and animal he will serve one year in prison.
