Student art, writing exhibition coming to Butler

The “Art.Write.Now.Tour 2017,” a traveling exhibition showcasing more than 100 original pieces of art and writing from the winners of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, will make its last stop at the Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave.

The exhibit, which will open Tuesday and run through June 4, will be in the lower level of the museum’s Beecher Center. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission to the Butler and the exhibit is free.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and the country’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative students in grades 7-12.

The works offer a glimpse of what is on the minds of teenagers. Alumni of the program include Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Truman Capote and Sylvia Plath, who won when they were teens. More recent alumni include filmmaker Richard Linklater, fashion designer Zac Posen and writer and director Lena Dunham.

More than 330,000 works of art and writing were submitted for adjudication at the regional level in 2017 in 29 categories, which include poetry, painting, editorial cartoon, video game design, architecture, short story, photography and more.
