In his new book “The Book of Highs: 255 Way to Alter Your Consciousness Without Drugs,” author Edward Rosenfeld provides exactly what the title claims. Here are some examples, with brief instructions:

v Zen power yell: Sit on knees wth buttocks perched on heels, arms at side. Take a deep breath and exhale five times. Then rise, fists clenched and arms crossed across chest for three more breaths. On count of eight, bound upward with all of your might, roaring like a lion, and throw your arms out forcefully.

v Fire walking: People in an ecstatic state who can control their own physiology usually come through it without a burn. Others, not so much.

v Postures: For example, stand on your head, hunker down on your haunches, or intertwine your arms.

v Bell ringing: Big bells are the best, but small ones are good too. But electronic substitutes that create the sound of bells are not acceptable substitutes.

v Metronome watching: Find your own pace, and after a while you might find yourself in a hypnotic trance.

Gospel music fest coming to Powers

YOUNGSTOWN

A gospel music festival featuring Fred Hammond will come to Powers Auditorium on April 26.

The lineup also includes Donnie McClurkin, Take 6, James fortune and Pastor Charles Jenkins. The show starts at 8 p.m.

Youth concert band will close season

YOUNGSTOWN

The Stambaugh Youth Concert Band will close its season with a concert featuring selected senior soloists and the presentation of the Barbara Armstrong Scholarship Award on April 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Stambaugh Auditorium. Tickets are $5 ($2 for seniors and students) at stambaughauditorium.com, by phone at 330-259-0555 and at the box office.

The performance will include works by contemporary composers Brian Balmages and Robert Sheldon. Guest conductor Mike Kelly, director of bands at Canfield High School, will lead the group through “Amor de Me Alma” by Z. Randall Stroope.
