Abandoned house will be site for art project

Aaron Knochel, an artist and art professor at Penn State University, will give an art workshop at Youngstown State University on Thursday that will be followed by an all-day project that will capture the history of a house that is slated for demolition.

Prof. Knochel’s workshop will begin at 5:10 p.m. in the auditorium of the McDonough Museum on Wick Avenue. The event at the abandoned house on the North Side – dubbed the One Day Monument Project – will occur on April 6.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Prof. Knochel’s research focuses on intersections between art education, social theory and media studies.

His workshop will encourage students to learn about, creatively interpret and memorialize a historic house at 326 Alameda Ave. in the historic Crandall Park neighborhood. The large house is typical of residential architecture in the area a century ago.

During the workshop, students and faculty will explore digital technologies and traditional artistic media to record, embellish, represent and interpret the stories about the home. The next day, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., students, faculty and interested members of the community will work with the artist to re-interpret the home using drawing, painting, video projection and other approaches.

A public celebration of the One Day Monument Project will follow from 5:30-8:30 p.m. It will include self-guided tours of the house, family-friendly activities and a pot luck dinner. To participate, email Dr. Lillian Lewis at lllewis02@ysu.edu.
