Staff report
STRUTHERS
As a prelude to Mother’s Day, Selah Dessert Theater will present “Motherhood Out Loud” for five performances, beginning next Thursday.
Conceived by Susan R. Rose and Joan Stein, the piece is a collection of vignettes and stories by celebrated American authors who take the audience on a journey from childbirth to old age.
Engaging, humorous and moving, the stories run the gamut of contemporary families. The audience is introduced to – among others – a mom chauffeuring her autistic son on his first date; a family who has adopted a Chinese baby; a gay man who, with his partner, uses a surrogate to start a family; and a new mom who gets advice from her mother.
“The authors and actors bring a modern perspective to who and what mothers are,” said director Mary Ruth Lynn. “It’s an evening filled with unexpected surprises, an evening that celebrates and validates mothers of all kinds.”
Cast members Danielle Jackson, Frank G. Martin, Erica Finegold Perna and Jeanine Rees each bring multiple characters to life.
Performances will be at 8 p.m. April 5, 6, 7, 13 and 14.
