WRESTLING

Girard’s DelGarbino honored by Trumbull commissioners

WARREN

The Trumbull County commissioners recognized Girard High School junior 285-pound wrestler Jack DelGarbino on Wednesday for winning a Division II state championship earlier this month. It is the first state title in the Indians’ 44-year history of wrestling. DelGarbino also was honored for winning a national wrestling championship in the Junior Division at the National High School Coaches Association Championship in Virginia Beach, Va., on Sunday.

BASEBALL

Austintown Fitch will open new turf field next week

AUSTINTOWN

The Austintown Fitch athletic department will celebrate 50 years of Fitch baseball with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new and improved Coppola Baseball field on Wednesday. The ceremony will begin at 4:45 p.m., with former baseball coaches Rich Coppola and Wally Ford throwing out the first pitches on the new field. The first game of the season will follow at 5 p.m. against Cardinal Mooney. The new turf baseball field is part of the $2.2 million Austintown Athletic Complex Project. Coppola Baseball Field will be the first all-turf baseball field in the area.

Poland 9, Hebron Lakewood 7

COLUMBUS

The Bulldogs began their season by defeating the defending Division II state champions. Monica Kurjan got the win and Ashley Wire the save combining to scatter eight hits. Poland’s bats started off hot, with the Bulldogs taking an 8-1 lead after two innings and holding on for a hard-fought victory. Five players had two hits: Brooke Bobbey, Sarah Boccieri Ally Nittoli, Peyton Slaina and Jordyn Olson.
