YSU rallies to defeat Eastern Michigan

The Youngstown State baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat Eastern Michigan 9-7 on Tuesday night.

The two teams combined to score 11 runs in the first three innings. The Penguins’ bullpen held Eastern Michigan to one run in the final five innings to set the stage for a comeback.

After the Penguins (5-17) tied the game at 7 in the ninth, Drew Dickerson walked to load the bases, Austin Trace drove in pinch-runner Lucas Nasonti with an infield single for the go-ahead run.

YSU added an insurance run on a pass ball to take a 9-7 lead into the bottom half.

Eastern Michigan (6-16) had a chance in the ninth when it loaded the bases with nobody out, but Dalton Earich retired the next three hitters.

Blaze Glenn, Lopatka and Dickerson each had two hits, and Glenn hit his third home run of the season for the Penguins to tie the game at 5 in the top of the third.

EMU got a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-3. Luke DeVenney’s solo homer in the bottom of the inning put the Eagles up 6-5, and they added a run in the sixth on an RBI double by Rensel Jr.

Youngstown State will host UIC in a three-game Horizon League series on Friday and Saturday at Eastwood Field.
