Penguins are unable to finish off sweep

Northern Kentucky scored eight runs in the final two innings to beat Youngstown 12-5 in a Horizon League game Sunday at Eastwood Field.

The Penguins led 5-3 after five innings and were in position to follow up their two wins Saturday with another victory to complete a sweep. The Norse (5-16, 2-4) got a run in the sixth, took the lead with two in the eighth and pulled away with six in the ninth.

Four different Penguins had two hits, and YSU (4-17, 3-3) outhit NKU 12-11 in the contest. Jeff Wehler was 2 for 5 and hit a three-run double in YSU’s four-run fourth. Trey Bridis, Drew Dickerson and Nick Caruso also had two hits for the Penguins.

Lusk, Taylor shine, but Penguins come up short

Sophomore Maddi Lusk allowed four hits and struck out six and senior Stevie Taylor hit her fourth home run, but YSU fell to IUPUI 2-1 Sunday in Horizon League play at the Covelli Sports Complex.

The Penguins fall to 9-14 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League while the Jaguars improve to 6-16 overall and 2-1.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Taylor drilled an 0-2 pitch over the right-field fence to knot the game at 1-1.

Penguins rally to beat Green Bay 4-3

YSU battled back for a 4-3 dual win over Green Bay on Sunday night at the Avalon Athletic Club. The Penguins won the final three singles matches to beat the Phoenix after falling behind 3-1.

The Penguins (7-8, 1-0 Horizon League) won two of three doubles matches to claim the point and victories in the final three matches by Joao Garretto, Matthew Kritzinger and Yossi Dahan lifted YSU over the Phoenix (6-9, 0-2).

The doubles point came down to a decisive match at No. 2. Garretto and Vasilis Vardakis picked up a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles while Green Bay earned a 6-3 win at No. 3. At No. 2, Danylo Veremeichuk and Dahan battled for a 7-6 (4) win over Charles Ridout and Felix Triebe.

Penguins dominate in sweep of Green Bay

YSU beat Green Bay 7-0 on Sunday morning at the Avalon Athletic Club.

With the victory, YSU improves to 8-9 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League while the Phoenix fall to 1-7 and 0-2.

The Penguins need to win one of two doubles matches after the Phoenix defaulted at No. 3. At No. 1, Sofia Macias and Tamara Teufl earned a 6-2 win over Theresa Tebon and Talli Piaskowski.

At No. 1 singles, Noelly Longi Nsimba beat Tebon 6-1, 6-4 in the most competitive singles match of the dual. At No. 2, Macias beat Piaskowski 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3, Anastasiia Khokhlova defeated Maria Neff 6-1, 6-0. Imaan Hassim was solid in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 over Sterre Tijssens and at No. 5, Teufl earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Samm Pederson.

MEN’S GOLF

YSU tied for 20th in Kingsmill Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, VA.

Ken Keller shot back-to-back rounds of 76 and YSU was tied for 20th place after one day of competition in the Kingsmill Intercollegiate.

Keller was the top YSU individual, tying for 49th place. The tournament continues today and Tuesday.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Shutt has 6-stroke lead in Pioneer Classic

BEVERLY

Courtney Shutt’s back-to-back rounds of 80 helped YSU take the team lead in the Pioneer Classic, hosted by Marietta College at Lakeside Golf Club.

Shutt holds a six-stroke lead over her nearest competitor and the Penguins are six shots ahead of second-place Capital.

The tournament continues today.
