Local ABWA chapter to meet
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its April 10 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes chicken cordon bleu, roast beef, redskin mashed potatoes with garlic, buttered green beans with garlic, salad, cole slaw, Jello and for dessert - cherries in the snow. She is co-owner of Whitehouse Fruit Farms. She will speak about the history of the farm, their many fruits and vegetables and their new Evercrisp apple. The public is welcome.
Listen and Lego at the library
Listen to a story and then have fun building with Legos at the Poland library on April 5 at 1 p.m. Legos will be provided for this program for children who are ages 4-7.
Newcomers club to meet
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on March 28 at Piccadilly Parlor Tea Room, located at 114 South Broad Street in Canfield. The gathering is at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Hostesses are Marie Ronyak and Rosemary Tyrell. A speaker from Youngstown public library will focus on services for seniors. Poland Friends of the Library meeting and presentation
Judy Stanislaw, an instructor at Fellows Riverside Gardens, will present “Herbs and Perennials” at the Poland library on April 3. The presentation will be following the coffee hour, which begins at 9:30 a.m. A business meeting will take place after the presentation.
Crafternoon is inspired by birds
Feel free to take a self-guided walk along Yellow Creek which runs along the Poland library parking lot on April 6 at 2:30 p.m. in the library’s large meeting room to explore birdsongs, color intricate bird drawings and fold paper birds and fly them. This program is for adults and teens.
Holy Family Church announces Easter Weekend schedule
Holy Family Church, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland, will host a Blessing of Easter Food at 12 p.m. on March 31 and an Easter Vigil Mass at 8 p.m. Easter Sunday Masses will be 6:30 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
Celebrate 40 years with Northeast Ohio Adoption Services
The Northeast Ohio Adoption Services is celebrating 40 years of families and children by offering an Evening with Dominic Tocco & Brotherhood. The event will take place on April 21 from 6-10 p.m. at The Lake Club in Poland. Enjoy a variety of music from Frank Sinatra, to Pitbull to Bruno Mars. A balloon pull and live and chance auctions will also be available. Tickets are $100 per person, which includes two drinks, or $175 per couple which includes four drinks. Friendly Squares to hold dance April 14
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on April 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Golf Classic bus trip
The 2018 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to Seneca Allegheny Casino on April 14. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 8 a.m. and depart from Seneca at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per person and each player will be given $25 in play and a $5 food coupon. Join the Poland library on March 24 at 2 p.m. for spring stories, a craft and more fun. This event is for children of all ages.
Alice in Bunnyland
Join the Poland library on March 22 at 6:30 p.m. as they celebrate spring with games, activities and treats inspired by Alice, the Mad Hatter and others. Build a house out of playing cards, tell time with the White Rabbit and, of course, play croquet with a flamingo. Crafts and snacks provided. This event is fun for the whole family.
Yoga class

Tales and Talk for 2’s and 3’s announced for March
Join the Poland library every Thursday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Poland library every Wednesday in March at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction to be April 21
The second annual 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction will take place April 21 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner starting at 6 p.m. and a live auction to follow. Auction items range from gift baskets to top-quality firearms to 2018 OSU Football tickets and more. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Mahoning County 4-H Endowment fund, an interest-bearing account maintained at the Ohio State University, which is used to benefit Mahoning County 4-H. This fund allows 4-H members to partake in many leadership and team building events such as the Ohio 4-H Leadership Camp, Ohio 4-H Sea Camp, 4-H Camp Whitewood and leadership conferences in Washington D.C. Tickets are $30 and a table for eight is $300 and the deadline to purchase is April 6.
Donna’s Kitchen to be open on Fridays during Lent
Donna’s Kitchen at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, located at 1655 S. Raccoon Road, will open to the public on Fridays from 4-8 p.m. during Lent. The menu features baked or fried fish dinners and sandwiches and children ages 6 and younger eat free with the purchase of an adult meal. Fish dinners cost $12 and include salad or coleslaw, vegetable, rolls and butter, coffee or tea and one side. Sides available are haluski, macaroni and cheese, pierogi or baked potato. Fish sandwiches cost $5.75 and takeout is available.
United Veterans Council to host awards banquet
The United Veterans Council of Greater Youngstown will host its 77 Anniversary Recognition and Awards Banquet on April 6 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown. The community is welcome to attend and encouraged to submit nominees for the annual awards. A veteran, citizen and youth of the year will be selected from nominations submitted by the areas veteran service groups and community at large. To nominate a candidate, submit the individual’s name, contact information, military background, the achievement or significant contribution performed for the community, veterans or patriotic nature during 2017 and any veteran organization he/she belongs to that may also endorse the candidate. Any nomination that is a veteran will be moved to that category even if submitted as Citizen of the Year. The Poland library will be closed from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on March 27. The library will be open to the public from 1-9 p.m. that day.
Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Poland Historical Society spring 2018 meetings and topics announced
The Poland Historical Society membership drive for 2018 is underway, and annual membership dues are $10 per person. Checks should be made payable to Poland Historical Society and can be mailed to the Poland Historical Society, P.O. Box 5052, Poland, OH 44514. Include your name, address, phone number and email address. Membership dues and donations are vitally important to the society in their efforts to maintain the Little Red Schoolhouse museum and to “Preserve the Past for the Future.” Members are not obligated to attend monthly meetings, but are always welcome. The society makes an effort to provide informative, interesting programs following the business portion of each meeting. Program topics scheduled for the first five months of 2018 include March 21- “Walter Arrel, Inn on the Green;” April 18 - “Ohio Indian Mounds” and May 15 - “Poland Township Park.”
Play Bookopoly at the library
Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly from Jan. 1 through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. The contest ends March 31 and all prizes will be awarded on April 16.
Junior League hosts New York trip
The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. Payment plans are accepted and must be paid in full by March 14 and will be $149 per person. Tickets are available until March 14 for the trip. Your ticket is transferable in the event you are unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
