C.H. Campbell Elementary School had its annual STEM Week Feb. 26 through March 2, with each grade level enjoying a day to learn about science, technology, engineering and math.
Each grade had its own designated STEM day with activities which were grade level appropriate and corresponded with the grade level’s curriculum. Each class had one hour to themselves in the gym to explore each of the STEM activities. PTO parent volunteers helped and instructed the students at each station.
“The kids love it. It’s hands on and they are out of the classroom learning about and experiencing real life activities. Different activities are offered throughout the week based on grade level and age,” said Cassie Whitman, C.H. Campbell PTO chair.
Second-grade STEM day included a math activity which challenged the students to add the numbers on giant cards. The students also visited a tangram station, at which they were encouraged to solve the puzzles. Students also visited a tangram station where they could solve the puzzles using a computer.
In the science department, students learned about air pressure and friction. At the engineering stations, students were instructed to use engineering skills to build a structure by stacking plastic cups. Also, students played a giant game of Jenga, while trying to prevent the structure from collapsing.
A Look and See table was set up in the middle of the gym for students to explore several items related to science, technology, engineering and math, including fossils, rocks, magnets and kaleidoscopes.
