Local church hosts Easter services
Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 South Broad Street, will host the following services for Easter: Maundy Thursday on March 29 at 7 p.m. - The story of Jesus’ sacrificial love; Good Friday on March 30 at 7 p.m. - Voices of lament at the cross; and Easter Sunday on April 1 at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. - Hear the unexpected laughter.
Local ABWA chapter to meet
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its April 10 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes chicken cordon bleu, roast beef, redskin mashed potatoes with garlic, buttered green beans with garlic, salad, cole slaw, Jello and for dessert - cherries in the snow. The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on March 28 at Piccadilly Parlor Tea Room, located at 114 South Broad Street in Canfield. The gathering is at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Columbus Children’s Theatre presents “The Three Little Pigs”
Full of laughter, fun and audience participation, The Columbus Children’s Theatre’s adaptation of “The Three Little Pigs” is a great way to celebrate National Library Week. Join the Canfield library on April 28 at 2 p.m. and find out what really happened when the Three Little Pigs met the Big Bad Wolf on their way to seek their fortune and build a home. Stephen King Constant Readers Club next meeting announced
Enjoy the master of suspense? Join the Canfield library on April 10 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Stephen King’s riveting stories, as well as other captivating tales by his peers. This month, dive into an informal discussion of King’s classic “The Shining” followed by a preview of new and exciting upcoming titles. This program is for adults.
Movie night at the library
Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie at the Canfield library on April 5 at 6 p.m. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This is for the family and children must be accompanied by an adult.
It’s raining cats and dogs and turtles and frogs
Join in the fun to vote for your favorite umbrella in the Canfield library Early Learning Area and help them choose their April winner. One vote per person per day and your vote enters you into a drawing for a gift certificate prize to Dough House Cookies at the Canfield library. Come and read to your favorite therapy dogs at the Canfield library on April 9 at 6 p.m. Help develop reading skills, promote confidence and encourage a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the library find one for you. This program is for school aged children. Therapy dogs are provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners and a local pet therapy group.
Decorate planter pots

Show and tell with history
The Canfield Historical Society will host a “History Show and Tell” evening that provides a chance for area residents to share a piece of their personal history. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on April 12 at the Canfield Historical Society Bond House, located at 44 West Main Street in Canfield, across from the Canfield library. The public is invited to bring old photos, letters, family mementos or any artifact to show and tell the stories behind their treasures. Participants don’t have to show and tell, they can just attend to look, listen and enjoy if they choose. Canfield Historical Society Curator Laura Zeh-Vazquez will be sharing a few seldom seen oldies from the archives and Society President Suzie McCabe will be sharing some interesting tid-bits of local history. The Canfield Historical Society continues its mission of collecting Canfield history with a scanning project where everyone who wishes to participate is invited to do so. Attendants to the lecture are encouraged to bring, if they are in possession of, any photos or documents relating to Canfield History to be scanned, therefore adding to the Historical Society’s collection.
Friendly Squares to hold dance April 14
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on April 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Canfield Boy Scout Troop 115’s to host pasta and meatball dinner
Canfield’s St. Michael’s Boy Scout Troop 115 invites the public to join them for their annual pasta and meatball dinner to take place on March 25 at St. Michael’s Parish Hall located at 360 N. Broad Street in Canfield. Pasta, meatballs, salad and dessert along with an opportunity to win prizes will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. You may sit down for dinner or grab it for carry out. Tickets will be available at the door and are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6–12. Children who are ages 5 and under eat free. The public is invited to join Boy Scout Troop 71 for their 54th annual Good Friday “All You Can Eat Fish” Dinner on March 30 from 4–7 p.m. at Western Reserve High School, located at 13850 W. Akron-Canfield Road (State Route 224). in Berlin Center (in the old building behind new school). Prepared and served by the members of the troop, this “all you can eat” fish dinner costs $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 6–12 and free for children ages 5 and under; dessert is limited to one per person. That Quilt Group I Belong To will take place on March 20 at the Rotary Building at Fair Park in Canfield. Sandy Lord from the Gallery in Mercer, Pa. is the featured guest. Golf Classic bus trip
The 2018 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to Seneca Allegheny Casino on April 14. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 8 a.m. and depart from Seneca at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per person and each player will be given $25 in play and a $5 food coupon. Audubon Society to meet on March 27
Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley invites the public to “It’s a Wonderful Life” by Bert Szabo, Chief Naturalist Emeritus from Summit MetroParks, at 7 p.m. on March 27 at the Canfield library. Born in 1920, Szabo worked with the MetroParks from 1957-1991, and is still volunteering there today at age 97. Hear first-hand accounts about his youth, career and active retirement, such as “typing his way through Europe” during WWII, being inducted into Ohio’s Conservation Hall of Fame seven years after Volney Rogers, and driving 50 miles last December, retracing his circuit, to search for species for the Great Akron Christmas Bird Count.
Alice in Bunnyland
Join the Canfield library on March 24 at 2:30 p.m. as they celebrate spring with games, activities and treats inspired by Alice, the Mad Hatter and others. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Canfield library every Thursday in March at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction to be April 21
The second annual 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction will take place April 21 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner starting at 6 p.m. and a live auction to follow. Auction items range from gift baskets to top-quality firearms to 2018 OSU Football tickets and more. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Mahoning County 4-H Endowment fund, an interest-bearing account maintained at the Ohio State University, which is used to benefit Mahoning County 4-H. This fund allows 4-H members to partake in many leadership and team building events such as the Ohio 4-H Leadership Camp, Ohio 4-H Sea Camp, 4-H Camp Whitewood and leadership conferences in Washington D.C. Donna’s Kitchen to be open on Fridays during Lent
Donna’s Kitchen at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, located at 1655 S. Raccoon Road, will open to the public on Fridays from 4-8 p.m. during Lent. The menu features baked or fried fish dinners and sandwiches and children ages 6 and younger eat free with the purchase of an adult meal. Fish dinners cost $12 and include salad or coleslaw, vegetable, rolls and butter, coffee or tea and one side. Sides available are haluski, macaroni and cheese, pierogi or baked potato. United Veterans Council to host awards banquet
The United Veterans Council of Greater Youngstown will host its 77 Anniversary Recognition and Awards Banquet on April 6 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown. A veteran, citizen and youth of the year will be selected from nominations submitted by the areas veteran service groups and community at large. Junior League hosts New York trip
The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
