Local ABWA chapter to meet
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its April 10 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes chicken cordon bleu, roast beef, redskin mashed potatoes with garlic, buttered green beans with garlic, salad, cole slaw, Jello and for dessert - cherries in the snow. She is co-owner of Whitehouse Fruit Farms. She will speak about the history of the farm, their many fruits and vegetables and their new Evercrisp apple. The public is welcome.
Newcomers club to meet
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on March 28 at Piccadilly Parlor Tea Room, located at 114 South Broad Street in Canfield. The gathering is at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Hostesses are Marie Ronyak and Rosemary Tyrell. A speaker from Youngstown public library will focus on services for seniors. I read YA book club to meet

Join the library’s beginners Dungeons and Dragons club and join the adventure at the Boardman library on April 18 at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments and snacks are provided at this program for teens in grades 7-12.
Business start-up workshop at the library
Are you thinking about starting a business in the near future or further down the road? Come to the Boardman library on April 14 at 2:30 p.m. They will address key topics for beginning a business and will discuss the library’s sources and services for business start-up and beyond. It’s a royal affair
Come party in the library’s castle at the Boardman library on April 12 at 7 p.m. with stories, games, food and a craft activity. A family program for children of all ages. Preschoolers must attend with an adult. Come in costume as a king, princess, knight or peasant to this one-hour program.
The pursuit of endurance with Jennifer Pharr Davis
Jennifer Pharr Davis, record-holder of the fastest known time on the Appalachian Trail, will reveal the secrets and habits behind endurance at the Boardman library on April 19 at 7 p.m. With a storyteller’s ear for fascinating detail and description, Pharr Davis will take readers along as she trains and sets her record and gives easy to understand tips and action items to help participants take perseverance to the next level.
Swap puzzles at the library
Swap six of your once done jigsaw puzzles with others at the Boardman library on April 11 at 4 p.m. This takes place on the second Wednesday of the month.
Boardman Friends of the Library meeting and presentation
The Friends of the Boardman Library presenter will be Dr. Ian Renne, speaking on “Global Warming,” on April 9 at 10 a.m. The presentation will be followed by a meeting.
Reader’s choice book club meeting to be April 9
On April 9 at the Boardman library discuss “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles at 7 p.m. Share your favorite books and find out what new ones will be published. We will preview May’s book, “The Wright Brothers” by David McCullough. This book club is for adults.
Teen Advisory Board meeting to be April 4
Check out the monthly Teen Advisory Board (TBA) meeting. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. This month’s meeting with be on April 4 at 6:30 p.m. Help plan and support teen activities at the library, meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome at this meeting for teens in grades 7-12.
Westminster Presbyterian offers used book sale
For the 62nd consecutive year, thousands of books will be available to purchase at the Westminster Presbyterian Church Used Book Sale. Categories of books include fiction, non fiction, sports, hobbies and religion, cookbooks, an especially a large section devoted to children’s books for all ages as well as video games, music CDs, vinyl, DVDs and puzzles. This year’s sale will take place on April 25 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and April 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. On April 26, all paperbacks are half price. On the 27th until 4 p.m., all books are half price. After 4 p.m. on the 27th, books are sold for $1 for a grocery bag, provided by the sale. Second annual Mahoning County 4-H Endowment dinner and auction
Mark your calendars to join Mahoning County 4-H for a night of food, fun and fellowship. The second annual 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction will take place on April 21 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner starting at 6 p.m. and a live auction to follow. Auction items range from gift baskets to top-quality firearms to 2018 Ohio State University football tickets and more. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Mahoning County 4-H Endowment fund, an interest-bearing account maintained at the Ohio State University, which is used to benefit Mahoning County 4-H. This fund allows 4-H members to partake in many leadership and team building events such as the Ohio 4-H Leadership Camp, Ohio 4-H Sea Camp, 4-H Camp Whitewood and leadership conferences in Washington D.C. To purchase tickets or make a donation towards the Endowment Dinner and Auction, contact the Mahoning County Extension Office at 330-533-5538. Tickets are $30 and a table for eight is $300. Friendly Squares to hold dance April 14
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on April 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Golf Classic bus trip
The 2018 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to Seneca Allegheny Casino on April 14. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 8 a.m. and depart from Seneca at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per person and each player will be given $25 in play and a $5 food coupon. Audubon Society to meet on March 27
Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley invites the public to “It’s a Wonderful Life” by Bert Szabo, Chief Naturalist Emeritus from Summit MetroParks, at 7 p.m. on March 27 at the Canfield library. Born in 1920, Szabo worked with the MetroParks from 1957-1991, and is still volunteering there today at age 97. Hear first-hand accounts about his youth, career and active retirement, such as “typing his way through Europe” during WWII, being inducted into Ohio’s Conservation Hall of Fame seven years after Volney Rogers, and driving 50 miles last December, retracing his circuit, to search for species for the Great Akron Christmas Bird Count.
Lego My Library
Meet at the Boardman library on March 10 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Cardinal Mooney High School hosts annual fifth- and sixth-grade day
On March 23 from 9 a.m. until 1:15 p.m., Cardinal Mooney High School will welcome area fifth- and sixth-graders for a day of education and fun at the school, located at 2545 Erie Street in Youngstown. All students will participate in science, drama and art classes along with an Olympics competition. Students can opt into a fourth elective class choosing between athletics, baseball/softball, computers, foreign languages, music; psychology, theology and wood shop. Lunch will be provided during the day. Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Boardman library every Tuesday in March at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Donna’s Kitchen to be open on Fridays during Lent
Donna’s Kitchen at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, located at 1655 S. Raccoon Road, will open to the public on Fridays from 4-8 p.m. during Lent. The menu features baked or fried fish dinners and sandwiches and children ages 6 and younger eat free with the purchase of an adult meal. Fish dinners cost $12 and include salad or coleslaw, vegetable, rolls and butter, coffee or tea and one side. Sides available are haluski, macaroni and cheese, pierogi or baked potato. Fish sandwiches cost $5.75 and takeout is available.
United Veterans Council to host awards banquet
The United Veterans Council of Greater Youngstown will host its 77 Anniversary Recognition and Awards Banquet on April 6 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown. The community is welcome to attend and encouraged to submit nominees for the annual awards. A veteran, citizen and youth of the year will be selected from nominations submitted by the areas veteran service groups and community at large. To nominate a candidate, submit the individual’s name, contact information, military background, the achievement or significant contribution performed for the community, veterans or patriotic nature during 2017 and any veteran organization he/she belongs to that may also endorse the candidate. Any nomination that is a veteran will be moved to that category even if submitted as Citizen of the Year. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Play Bookopoly at the library
Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
