Local Kiwanis club hosts pancake breakfast
Austintown Kiwanis Club is hosting its annual pancake breakfast on March 24 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.. at the Austintown Community Church.
Saxon Club to host annual benefit dinner
The Youngstown Saxon Club’s 42nd annual President’s Benefit Goulash Dinner will take place on April 14. Doors open at 6 p.m. with dinner bring served family style at 6:30. The public is welcome. A donation of $16 for adults and $7.50 for children is asked from those attending the event. The meal includes coffee, strudel and some refreshments. The event will ofer music, awards and raffles. Newcomers club to meet
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on March 28 at Piccadilly Parlor Tea Room, located at 114 South Broad Street in Canfield. The gathering is at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Learn the fundamentals of music theory from Shirley Bartlett at the Austintown library every Thursday in the month of April at 2 p.m. Topics covered in this five week session will include basic theory like the names of lines and spaces and more advanced concepts like major and minor scales. Reservations are needed for each session at these classes for teens and adults.

Event offers pictures with therapy bunnies
Legacy Dog Rescue and F5RS - Frisky Ferrets, Fuzzies and Feathered Friends are hosting a picture with a Rescue Bunny event at Family Video, located at 4385 Kirk Road in Austintown, on March 25 from 12-4 p.m. The cost is $8 to have your picture taken with a real therapy bunny or two and the photo will be printed on-site to take home (4 x 6). There will also be delicious baked goods available for purchase to help continue the life saving efforts of both groups. Bakers needed. No dogs are allowed due to the real bunnies. Local DQ has Easter event
The Austintown Dairy Queen, located at 146 N. Canfield Niles Road in Austintown, will host an Easter event on March 24 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event will include free pictures with the Easter Bunny (use your own camera or they will take your photo and have it developed in a 4 X 6 size and you may pick it up anytime after March 28 and have them in time for Easter), free candy-filled eggs for children under 9-years-old (visit each of three stations for your eggs and treats), real bunnies and other “spring” animals such as baby goats and maybe a few chicks to pet and more. Eat lunch with Curly the Cone. Color an egg the DQ way. There will be DQ cupcakes available for purchase and you can decorate it with candy sprinkles, icing and gel. There will also be a chance to win an Easter Basket and other prizes.
Austintown Bounce hosts egg hunting event
Join the Austintown Bounce Indoor Play Centere on March 24 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. for an Easter Eggstravaganza. The cost to participate is $5 at this event for children who are ages 3 and up. The event will be limited to the first 150 children in the door. The egg hunt starts at 10:15 and participants must bring their own basket. Three age groups (3-5 years-old, 6-9 years old and 10-years-old and older) will have egg hunts. The event includes time to bounce on the inflatables, prize baskets to win during the egg hunt, goodie bags and more than 4,000 eggs. This event is sponsored by First American Loans.
Community Church offers “trash and treasure” sale and breakfast
The Austintown Community Church Preschool Childcare Center will be hosting their annual “Trash & Treasure Sale” on March 24 in the youth auditorium of the education wing at Austintown Community Church, located at 242 S. Canfield-Niles Road (State Route 46) in Austintown from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Table rentals are available by contacting the preschool office at 330-793-1843 and must be paid for by March 19. Table set up will be at 8 a.m. There will be a variety of specialty raffle baskets with the drawings at 12:45 p.m. Winners do not need to be present. Snacks, light lunch items and beverages will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the sale go towards the purchase of developmentally appropriate resources for the children. Friendly Squares to hold dance April 14
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on April 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Austintown Local School District announces open enrollment for 2018-2019
The Austintown Local School district will again have statewide open enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in grades Kindergarten through eighth-grade based on grade level availability. Applications are now available on the Austintown School’s website at www.austintownschools.org. In order to be accepted for open enrollment, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Any students living in the state of Ohio and entering grades kindergarten through eighth are eligible. One application must be completed for each student. No new students will be accepted in grades 9-12. Only existing open enrollment students and those in special programs will be accepted into the high school. Open enrollment will close on Aug. 3 for the 2018-2019 school year. Austintown Fitch High School earns Purple Star Award
Austintown Fitch High School has earned a Purple Star Award from the Ohio Department of Education. The Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to the nation’s military. Fitch High School was recognized for the numerous activities that honor military families and local veterans. In August, a committee of dedicated individuals were assembled with the main focus being to create a more nurturing environment for military connected families throughout the district. The committee, now named the Purple Star Committee, is working on a special project at Fitch High School that will serve as the main “hub” for all military related activities. Fitch’s application is also listed on the ODE website as an “Exemplary Application” to use as a point of reference for others wishing to earn a Purple Star designation.
Golf Classic bus trip
The 2018 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to Seneca Allegheny Casino on April 14. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 8 a.m. and depart from Seneca at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 per person and each player will be given $25 in play and a $5 food coupon. Audubon Society to meet on March 27
Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley invites the public to “It’s a Wonderful Life” by Bert Szabo, Chief Naturalist Emeritus from Summit MetroParks, at 7 p.m. on March 27 at the Canfield library. Born in 1920, Szabo worked with the MetroParks from 1957-1991, and is still volunteering there today at age 97. Hear first-hand accounts about his youth, career and active retirement, such as “typing his way through Europe” during WWII, being inducted into Ohio’s Conservation Hall of Fame seven years after Volney Rogers, and driving 50 miles last December, retracing his circuit, to search for species for the Great Akron Christmas Bird Count.
Battle of the Books competition at the library
During the month of March, 16 YA books face off in head-to-head competition at the Austintown library, but only one can win the battle of the books. Fill out and submit your book bracket to be eligible for a random prize drawing. This competition is for teens in grades 7-12.

A dozen makes a difference
The Austintown library wants its materials being used by the community. Help them empty their shelves by borrowing their books, movies and other items. Borrow a dozen or more items at one time on your library card at the Austintown branch during March. Show your check-out receipt to a librarian to receive a small giveaway. Pre-k storytime at the library
This program, offered every Wednesday in March at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for 4-5 year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. You will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Austintown library every Tuesday in March at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction to be April 21
The second annual 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction will take place April 21 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner starting at 6 p.m. and a live auction to follow. Auction items range from gift baskets to top-quality firearms to 2018 OSU Football tickets and more. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Mahoning County 4-H Endowment fund, an interest-bearing account maintained at the Ohio State University, which is used to benefit Mahoning County 4-H. This fund allows 4-H members to partake in many leadership and team building events such as the Ohio 4-H Leadership Camp, Ohio 4-H Sea Camp, 4-H Camp Whitewood and leadership conferences in Washington D.C. Tickets are $30 and a table for eight is $300 and the deadline to purchase is April 6.
Austintown Schools announce calendar revisions
During a special board meeting on Feb. 15, the Austintown School Board approved an adjustment to the 2017-2018 calendar in regards to the spring break schedule. March 26, 27 and 28 will now be non-school days for students with that adjustment. The board made this decision for a few reasons. The board heard concerns regarding the length of spring break and wanted to give families the opportunity to take a trip. An Ohio Athletic Association rule caused a conflict with one of the district’s athletic programs and staff will be able to take advantage of this time and participate in professional development surrounding school safety. The board felt it was necessary for staff to again take part in active-shooter training.
Donna’s Kitchen to be open on Fridays during Lent
Donna’s Kitchen at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, located at 1655 S. Raccoon Road, will open to the public on Fridays from 4-8 p.m. during Lent. The menu features baked or fried fish dinners and sandwiches and children ages 6 and younger eat free with the purchase of an adult meal. Fish dinners cost $12 and include salad or coleslaw, vegetable, rolls and butter, coffee or tea and one side. Sides available are haluski, macaroni and cheese, pierogi or baked potato. Fish sandwiches cost $5.75 and takeout is available.
United Veterans Council to host awards banquet
The United Veterans Council of Greater Youngstown will host its 77 Anniversary Recognition and Awards Banquet on April 6 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown. The community is welcome to attend and encouraged to submit nominees for the annual awards. A veteran, citizen and youth of the year will be selected from nominations submitted by the areas veteran service groups and community at large. To nominate a candidate, submit the individual’s name, contact information, military background, the achievement or significant contribution performed for the community, veterans or patriotic nature during 2017 and any veteran organization he/she belongs to that may also endorse the candidate. Any nomination that is a veteran will be moved to that category even if submitted as Citizen of the Year. The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. The contest ends March 31 and all prizes will be awarded on April 16.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
