The Boardman library offered a Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s event that included a story time, songs and craft on Jan. 3.
The event used a bedtime theme for the activities done throughout the event. Boardman librarian Karen Saunders led the event.
Saunders read three books to the children. The first story, “The Napping House“ by Audrey Wood, repeated many descriptive words for the children to learn. Saunders gave the children a baby doll for “Here is the Baby“ by Polly Kanevsky and Taeeun Yoo. Every time she said ‘baby,’ they passed the baby doll, working on their word identification skills. The final story, Ian Whybrow’s “The Noisy Way to Bed,“ included many animals. The children held up a picture of the animals when Saunders read the animal names.
The children received other literacy lessons through songs. They sang “Brother John“ and another song called “Are You Sleepy?“ in the tune of the first song. They also sang “Rock-a-Bye Baby“ while holding either the baby doll or a stuffed animal.
The event ended with a craft that worked the children’s creative and motor skills. The children had a worksheet relating to Wood’s “The Napping House“ where they placed the characters from the book in order. They colored the characters and cut out their shapes from the worksheet. They glued the piece of paper to another paper and taped cylinders to the back to make their craft stand.
The library has Baby Brilliant events for toddlers every Wednesday throughout the month. They also have another event on Tuesdays for children 6-23 months of age.
