1865: Eight people, including Mary Surratt and Dr. Samuel Mudd, are convicted by a military commission of conspiring with John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln.

1918: Labor activist and socialist Eugene V. Debs is arrested in Cleveland, charged under the Espionage Act of 1917 for a speech he’d made two weeks earlier denouncing U.S. involvement in World War I.

1936: The Civil War novel “Gone with the Wind” by Margaret Mitchell is first published by The Macmillan Co. in New York.

1953: The first Chevrolet Corvette, with its innovative fiberglass body, is built at a General Motors assembly facility in Flint, Mich.

2008: President George W. Bush signs legislation to pay for war operations in Iraq and Afghanistan for the rest of his presidency and beyond, hailing the $162 billion plan as a rare product of bipartisan cooperation.

1993: The U.S. Economic Development Administration earmarks $817,200 to help start a business incubator in downtown Youngstown. The Youngstown Edison Incubator Corp. will run the venture out of the former Furnitureland building on West Federal Street.

Belmont Pines Hospital, a 77-bed facility in Liberty Township that treats adolescents with emotional and behavioral problems, will be cutting its 100-member staff by 14 percent.

Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman Don Hanni Jr. says U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. has been considering a run for the U.S. Senate, but instead should run for governor of Ohio.

1978: The Sharon City School Board votes to stop paying for health insurance and other fringe benefits at midnight, when the current contract with the Sharon Teachers Association expires. Negotiations on a new contract are continuing.

A man charged with rape and another serving a sentence for assault escape from the Youngstown City Jail after overpowering matron Julia Waller who was giving one of the inmates an aspirin.

Television star Bob Crane, who played the title role in “Hogan’s Heroes,” is found murdered in an apartment in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he had been appearing in a play. Crane appeared at the Kenley Players in 1969 in a production of “Cactus Flower.”

1968: Four men, three of them Pennsylvania convicts, come to Youngstown on a gun-buying spree and are involved in a shoot-out with a police officer. They are caught after taking a Girard couple hostage in their home.

Cadet Patrolman Clinton Clark, 18, on routine patrol with two Youngstown police officers, spots four men acting suspiciously outside the SAV discount store at 557 W. Federal St. A chase that ends in Girard begins when the men spotted the patrolmen watching them from their cruiser.

The Rev. Homer J.R. Elford, senior pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, will take part in an evangelistic mission to the Philippines and Far East.

1943: A large freight truck loaded with 10 tons of baking powder valued at $4,500 catches fire on Route 46 three miles south of Canfield, destroying the truck and its cargo.

About 20,000 district motorists will be driving their cars illegally unless they get new federal tax stamps, required for all cars by July 1.

J.L. Pete Mauthe is named vice president in charge of operations at Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co., succeeding the late William Gillies.
