Westminster Presbyterian Church welcomes new pastor

Westminster Presbyterian Church, located in Boardman, will soon welcome Rev. Adam Rodgers to his new position as church pastor. After a yearlong search, Rodgers was elected pastor in May, and begins his new season of leadership this week. Rodgers and his family come to Westminster Presbyterian following his Pastorship at the Stoneboro Presbyterian Church in Stoneboro, Pa. A graduate of Westminster College and the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary - he brings 14 years of pastoral and pulpit experience. The public is welcome to attend Rodgers’ first Sermon on July 1 at 9:30 a.m. at the church, located at 119 Stadium Dr. in Boardman.

Mill Creek ABWA to meet on July 10

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its July 10 meeting at the Georgeanne Parker Pavilion in Boardman Park. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. and a picnic style dinner will start at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include chicken, provided by the Chapter, and an assortment of casseroles brought by each member. The program for the evening will be the installation of the 2018-2019 officers. The public is welcome.

I Read YA book club

This book club is for adult fans of young adult literature. Talk about why you like YA. Read and discuss. The next meeting will take place on July 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. They will discuss “Genuine Fraud” by E. Lockhart. This event is for adults.

Game night for adults

Play the hand you’re dealt of cards (rummy), dice (farkle) and scrabble at the Boardman library on July 26 at 7 p.m. Bring a friend or two and join in on the fourth Thursday of the month for snacks and bragging rights in this one-hour program for adults.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Tuesday in July at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library.

Lego my library

Meet at the Boardman library on July 14 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Reader’s Choice book club

Share your favorite books and find out which new ones are being published at this event at the Boardman library on July 9 at 7 p.m. The group will discuss “Hillbilly Elegy” by J.D. Vance. This event is for adults.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross on July 5 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Blood Pressure Screening

There will be a blood pressure screening on July 2 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Boardman library by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Nominations sought for Italian Fest

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The nominee would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremonies on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Barn yard petting zoo

A trailer full of animals is coming to the Boardman library parking lot for three hours on July 12 from 5-8 p.m. All animals are safe and secure within their own space in the trailer and sanitary hand cleanser is provided to be used after petting the animals. Participants will play lawn games as they wait to enter the petting zoo, which has a minimum of 16 animals. Rain date will be announced if needed. This event is for children of all ages.

Family story time

Bring the whole family to the Boardman library on July 11 and 25 at 10 a.m. for stories, games, crafts and fun for all ages.

Shake, shimmy and make

Make a musical instrument and more during regular hours at the Boardman library during July. This event is for rock and rollers of all ages.

TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting

Help plan and support teen activities at the Boardman library on July 11 at 6:30 p.m. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome.

Puzzle swap

Swap six of your once done jigsaw puzzles with others on July 11 at 4 p.m. at the Boardman library. This event takes place every second Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library at 4 p.m. For more information, call the development office at 330-740-6086. This event is for adults.

Magic and illusions with David Anthony

David Anthony’s magic show on July 16 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library promises to be fun for all ages. Come and be amazed by his magic and illusions, juggling and plenty of audience participation.

Tales of King Arthur

Be swept away by tales of gallant knights in shining armor, elegant ladies in medieval castles and the court of Camelot as high school actors perform Arthurian Legends at the Boardman library on July 26 at 2 p.m. This event is for school-age children, tweens and teens.

An evening with Terry Pluto, sportswriter

Join the Boardman library on July 25 from 6:30-8 p.m. as they host celebrated sportswriter Terry Pluto. Pluto promises a fun and informal night as he talks about sports and life. His books will be available for sale after the program. Call the library to reserve your seat or register online via the library’s event calendar. This event is for adults and teens.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on July 18 at 10 a.m. The group will read a book and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get read for kindergarten. This event is for children who are ages 2-6.

Paint by sticker

You may have heard of paint by numbers, but instead of paint this group will be using stickers. Join the Boardman library on July 18 at 7 p.m. to create some famous music icons. Supplies will be provided. This event is for tweens and teens.

Apprentice’s Inn

Join the Boardman library’s beginners Dungeons and Dragons club on Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. and join the adventure. This starts the group’s fall campaign so be ready to create a new character. Refreshments and snacks are provided. This event is for teens.

Crazy quilting

Let volunteers from the Embroiderer’s Guild of Youngstown show you simple quilting stitches on July 20 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Boardman library. All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Independence Day on July 4.

Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Night market to begin in June

The Mission Night Market inaugural year festivities will occur at the Huntington Place plaza, located at 1393 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, on the second Friday of every month June through October, from 6-10 p.m. These dates are July 13, Aug. 10, Sept. 14 and Oct. 12. Proceeds to benefit Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. Vendors spots are available for $50 per 10 by 10 tent space and $100 for food trucks and the several 10 by 20 tent spaces. However, participation is by application process. MNM Committee limits the overall number and type of vendors for each event and vendors must be approved to participate. Park to host day camp during summer

Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will soon begin. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginations, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. The curriculum is designed to be age appropriate, educational and fun as the children participate in a daily schedule of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. Adventure Day Camp will run for 10 weeks, starting on June 11 and running through Aug. 17. The Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later for an additional charge. Registration begins on April 2. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
