Pasta dinner fundraiser to be July 8
The Knights of Columbus #3930 from Immaculate Heart of Mary will be having a pasta dinner fundraiser on July 8 from 12-5 p.m. It will take place at The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown. Dinners cost $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 -9 and children under 6 eat free. All dinners include pasta and meatballs, tossed salad, bread and butter, dessert and beverages. There will be a 50/50 raffle. This fundraiser is taking place for Rosemarie King who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
AMS to host fifth annual Mahoning Valley FIRST Robotics Competition, charity food drive
The Northeast Ohio FIRST Robotics Alliance (NEOFRA) recently announced the 2018 Mahoning Valley Robotics Challenge high school robotics competition, set for June 30 from 8:45 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. at Austintown Middle School, located at 800 South Raccoon Road in Youngstown, in the main gymnasium. The MVRC is free and open to the public. Concessions will be available – proceeds will help fund future NEOFRA robotics competitions. NEOFRA is hosting a charity food drive at the MVRC to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. They encourage spectators to bring non-perishable food items and drop them off at the designated drop-off areas when they arrive. The most-needed food items are peanut butter, cereal, canned fruit and vegetables, tuna fish, dry pasta and macaroni and cheese. Monetary donations are also welcome – for every dollar donated, the food bank provides six meals to those in need. Local restaurant hosts tasting event
The Manor Restaurant will host a Craft Beer and Crepe Tasting on July 14 from 5-7 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Sweet and savory crepes will be featured along with local brewers Paladin Brewing, Biker Brewhouse, Birdfish Brewing Company and Numbers Brewing Company. Bingo benefit to be July 8
There will be a Bingo benefit for Rosemarie King, wife of the Immaculate Heart of Mary custodian, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This event will take place at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, on July 8. Bingo games will begin at 6:15 p.m. The cost is $10 for a minimum master set. There will be eight games, 60/40 split. The last game will be a coverall with $100 added to the pot. No master sets will be sold after 6 p.m. Snacks and refreshments will be available.
Mill Creek ABWA to meet on July 10
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its July 10 meeting at the Georgeanne Parker Pavilion in Boardman Park. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. and a picnic style dinner will start at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include chicken, provided by the Chapter, and an assortment of casseroles brought by each member. Sunshine Golf Outing to take place on July 21
The 13th annual Sunshine Benefit Golf Outing, sponsored by Magilla’s Sports Bar and Grill, will take place on July 21 at Lakeside Golf Course. The outing is a three-person scramble that includes continental breakfast and lunch at the turn, followed by a made-to-order steak dinner reception at Magilla’s Sports Bar where prizes will be awarded for hole events, the winner of the 50/50 drawing and the winners of the Chinese auction will be announced. This year’s recipient is Rachel Sheridan of Boardman, who is currently battling stage 3 intraductal breast cancer. The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. Nominations sought for Italian Fest
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The nominee would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremonies on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Michael Roy’s Cirque du Papier: performing paper magic
See an interactive stand-up origami presentation by visual artist Michael Roy Baldridge on July 24 at 2 p.m. at the Austintown library. He brings origami into the new millennium, combining classic Japanese style origami with the latest in high tech folding. He’ll transform single, flat squares of paper into 3D forms of animals, flowers, sea life, birds and decorative objects right before your eyes. One sheet of paper. No cuts. No tears. No glue. With dexterity, quick wit and knowledge of origami history and technique, he will share the technology and art that is origami. The presentation will be followed by a hands-on origami workshop. Understanding and responding to Dementia-related behavior by Alzheimer’s Association
Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Join the Austintown library on July 18 at 6:30 p.m. to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. Compete against other families in an all-ages music trivia game on July 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. The multiple choice quiz, accessed by your phone or one of the library’s devices, will test your knowledge of some of the top songs from the past 50 years. Answer quickly and accurately to score the most points. The winning family gets to be first in the post-game refreshments line. Snacks will be provided.
Rockin’ DIY guitar picks
Join the Austintown library on July 18 at 10 a.m. for a music-inspired craft. Use a guitar pick punch to create custom picks and jewelry. This event is for teens and tweens.

Match the album’s title and artist with the correct cover art for a chance to win a prize. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 and is offered during regular hours at the Austintown library throughout July.
A dozen makes a difference
The Austintown library wants their materials being used by the community. Help them empty their shelves during July by borrowing our books, movies and other items. Each time you check out a dozen or more items, you will help them create a masterpiece by adding a square to their “Starry Night” mosaic poster. This event is for all ages.
Stamping with Cindy
Learn to create your own handmade cards using stamps, punches and other fun tools at the Austintown library on July 19 at 3 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. Sign up to create each month’s greeting card with matching envelope. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Redeemer Lutheran Church VBS has “On the Farm” theme
Redeemer Lutheran Church will host its annual Vacation Bible School for children who are ages 3-12 on July 18-20 from 9 a.m. until noon. The theme will be “On the Farm.” The program will take place at the Mahoning County Experimental Farm Classroom on the first two days. The final day will take place at Redeemer Lutheran church, located at 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown. There will be a picnic on the last day. Austintown Food Service department announces summer food program
The Austintown Local School District will again sponsor the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Free meals will be made available to all children ages 1-18 at the Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road - Lynn Kirk Loop. Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 4 until Aug. 17. The 2018 Summer Concerts in the Park Series at Austintown Township Park, located at 6000 Kirk Road, will soon begin. All concerts will take place on Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. (weather permitting). Saxon Club hosts annual flea market
The Saxon Club will start its annual flea market event on May 1 with a flea market taking place every Tuesday through October. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and takes place in the Saxon Club parking lot, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Austintown. Vendors can set up before 8 a.m. if they would like. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Austintown Local School District announces open enrollment for 2018-2019
The Austintown Local School district will again have statewide open enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in grades Kindergarten through eighth-grade based on grade level availability. Applications are now available on the Austintown School’s website at www.austintownschools.org. In order to be accepted for open enrollment, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Any students living in the state of Ohio and entering grades kindergarten through eighth are eligible. One application must be completed for each student. No new students will be accepted in grades 9-12. Only existing open enrollment students and those in special programs will be accepted into the high school. Open enrollment will close on Aug. 3 for the 2018-2019 school year.
